Syria Currency, Cash, and Cards in 2026

Pack cash. The card story is real, and it is not your taxi.

The Central Bank of Syria’s official bulletin on 17 September 2026 lists a mid-rate of 122.00 new Syrian pounds per US dollar. Visa announced a first live international transaction in Syria on 26 August 2026. Mastercard and QNB processed a first point-of-sale payment the same week (Reuters, 27 August). The central bank told Reuters the service has not reached nationwide coverage.

US State, retrieved the same day as the 122.00 bulletin, still tells travellers to rely on cash rather than US-issued bank cards, to change money at licensed offices, and that torn or old dollars may be rejected or taken at a worse rate. The UK FCDO: prices for some items are listed in US dollars, and electronic payment is minimal or absent.

Syrian pound to US dollar (the number you asked)

The currency’s name is the Syrian pound (also called lira; code SYP). US State still describes the 2026 note redesign as something the Central Bank “would introduce.” The notes are in circulation; the bulletin you want is the one on cb.gov.sy.

US State: exchange only at licensed offices in major cities, the Commercial Bank of Syria, the Real Estate Bank, and private banks (some desks sit in 4- and 5-star hotels). Do not change with a man on the pavement.

Bring new, unmarked US dollars. State: torn or old notes may be refused or discounted. The visa window wants the same quality of paper.

Cards: tested, not nationwide, not the visa stamp

Your issuer can still block Syria even if a Damascus terminal is live. US State’s sanctions section remains on the same advisory: targeted measures exist; there are no US-based banks in Syria. A Mastercard logo in a QNB press release does not force a London or New York bank to authorise the charge. Call the issuer before you fly. Say the word Syria. Keep the cash plan.

Do not plan on an ATM spitting dollars. State still describes ATMs that “usually honor” major cards. That line sits on the same page that tells you to rely on cash. Treat ATMs as a rumour until a member names a machine that paid them this month.

Western Union exists (US State). It is a backup, not a budget.

Hospitals want cash (US State). That is the medical-evacuation problem on the safety page, with a different envelope.

What to carry for a city week

• Visa-stamp cash in USD, more than your nationality row, new notes. Cards do not pay immigration.
• A second USD stash for rooms, taxis, food, and a bad day. Worth-visiting’s stack is the shape; this page is the medium.
• Some new Syrian pounds from a licensed changer after you land — small notes for water, a bus, a bakery. You will still be quoted dollars in hotels.
• The card, as a trial at a hotel or a QNB-terminal restaurant, not as the plan.
• A photo of the CBS bulletin if you like arguing. The changer still sets the window.

FCDO: there are limits on cash withdrawals in-country and on financial transactions. You are not here to run a payroll.

Mistakes that strand you without dinner

• Treating the August press events as “Syria takes Visa now.”
• Arriving with a card and no notes.
• Changing money in the street.
• Mixing old and new pounds by two zeros.
• Paying the visa stamp in Syrian pounds because you already changed everything.
• Planning an ATM.
• Using worn twenties the visa clerk will not take.
