Daily costs and money-saving in Thailand
Thailand can be cheap or mid-range depending on how you move and where you sleep. A backpacker day of street food, a fan room, and local buses is a different number than Grab everywhere, air-con hotels, and island speedboats. Ask with a daily target and a style, not “is Thailand expensive.”
Cash still matters at markets and some vans. ATMs charge a foreign-card fee; people here compare withdrawal strategies and which cards still reimburse. Touch-and-go style apps and PromptPay are more useful once you have a local account — tourists usually live on cash plus Grab.
The silent budget killers are the same every year: airport transfers on arrival, tourist-area restaurants, motorbike “insurance” deposits, and last-minute ferry upgrades. A three-day island hop can cost more in boats than in beds.
Prices in older posts drift. Quote a year or a month if you share a number. If you are comparing Thailand to Vietnam or Malaysia for a two-week pot, say how you travel so the replies are not about a digital-nomad month you are not living.

Thai bank machines commonly add a flat fee of around 220 THB per withdrawal on foreign-issued cards, on top of whatever your own bank charges. Being flat is the important part: five small withdrawals cost roughly five times what one large withdrawal costs.
