Can Tourists Go to Syria Right Now?

Yes, tourists are entering Syria. No, that does not mean your government, your insurer, or your airline have signed off.

Work the problem in this order. Stop at the first "no" you cannot live with.

Do this before you book anything

If the first item is a hard no for you, the trip is off. The rest of this page is for people who have already decided the advisory is not the end of the conversation.

1. Open your government's Syria page. If it says do not travel, write that down. Everything after this step is travel against official advice.
2. Find your passport row in the table below. US and Canadian official pages currently disagree.
3. Search the operating airline's own site for Damascus (DAM) or Aleppo (ALP) on your dates. If the carrier will not sell you the seat, the rest is theory.
4. Email your insurer one question: "Does this policy pay if I travel to Syria against a do-not-travel advisory?" Keep the reply.
5. Ask someone who entered in the last 30 days, same passport family, what the desk actually did. That check lives on Meet Locale.

Can you visit Syria without a visa first?

For most Western, Gulf, and East Asian leisure passports, yes, at the counter, as of September 2026. That is practice, not a statute. Cash USD, often a 15-day stamp at the airport. Canada still tells non-Arab nationals to apply at a mission first. India, China, Pakistan, Russia, and most African passports should get written pre-approval before buying a ticket.

Is Syria open for tourism?

Open enough that people are arriving. Not open in the sense that Western governments recommend the trip.

Syria's Ministry of Tourism reported 3.52 million visitors in the first half of 2026, against 1.67 million a year earlier. The useful part is the split, not the headline:

Foreign passports, including Western ones, are in that 719,000. Most of the 3.52 million were still Syrians living abroad. Use the table, not a recovery slogan.

Your government is not saying the border is closed

It is saying it does not want you there, and it cannot pick you up.

• United States — Level 4, 11 December 2025. Terrorism, unrest, kidnapping, crime, armed conflict. Embassy in Damascus suspended since 2012. Czechia handles only emergencies. The same page still describes a possible on-arrival tourist visa for US citizens (Damascus airport or land from Lebanon/Jordan, about USD 200, about 30 days). That is an entry note inside a do-not-travel advisory.
• United Kingdom — Against all travel. No consular support from inside Syria. Insurance can be invalidated. The FCDO safety page, same retrieval day, still says DAM and ALP have some international flights. City-level risk, including the July 2026 Damascus bombings: Is Syria safe to visit in 2026?.
• Canada — Avoid all travel. Non-Arab nationals: visa from a Syrian embassy or consulate before departure, not at the border. If you hold a Canadian passport, that line is the one you act on until a Syrian mission tells you otherwise in writing.
• Australia — Smartraveller, current 18 September 2026: do not travel. No embassy in Syria. Help is extremely limited.

None of those pages say "tourism is illegal." They say the trip is on you.

Can you fly — and will they let you board?

Sometimes, into Damascus and Aleppo only. Other Syrian airports remain closed (UK FCDO, 17 September 2026). Qatar Airways announced daily Doha–Damascus from 1 May 2026. Turkish Airlines sells DAM and Aleppo on its own site. The boarding catch: some check-in systems still want a visa number even when Syria will stamp you. If that happens, fly to Beirut or Amman and cross by land.

After you enter: two rules people miss

Canada's official Syria page (retrieved 17 September 2026) states two requirements that visa round-ups usually skip. Treat them as live until a Syrian desk tells you otherwise:

• If you intend to stay longer than 14 days, register with the Syrian Immigration and Passports Office before the 15th day. On a tourist visa, that clock restarts each time you enter.
• Some travellers need an exit permit from the General Security Department to leave.

Count the ink in the passport. A 15-day airport stamp is not a 30-day stay. If your stamp is shorter than your ticket out, you have a paperwork problem, not a tourism one.

Who should not treat this as a yes

• You will not travel against your government's advisory. Then the answer is no, and it is a clean no.
• Israeli or Iranian citizenship, or an Israel stamp you cannot replace. UK FCDO: expect refusal.
• You hold a passport on the pre-approval list above and you do not have written clearance.
• You need a policy that pays for medical evacuation and the insurer said no.
• Dual Syrian nationality with unanswered military-service questions. Canada's page flags this for men of Syrian descent. That is a legal problem, not a tourism one.

Mistakes that waste a ticket

• Reading "do not travel" as "the airport is closed." The FCDO and Qatar Airways both describe flights.
• Reading "flights exist" as "I am covered." You are not, unless the insurer said so in writing.
• Assuming Canada's pre-visa rule and the US on-arrival note can be mixed. They cannot. Use the page that matches your passport.
• Paying for a non-refundable fare before the airline confirms boarding rules for visa-on-arrival.
• Arriving with no cash. US citizens should budget about USD 200 for the stamp (US State). Other passports: see the visa-on-arrival fee table.
• Treating a 15-day airport stamp as a 30-day stay. Count the ink in the passport, not the stay length you expected.
• Skipping the land option after a check-in refusal. Beirut or Amman plus Masnaa/Nassib is how people still enter when the airline desk says no.
• Staying past day 14 without registering. Canada's page says the immigration office wants you before day 15.
