Best Time to Visit Syria

As of 17 September 2026, there is no safe season. Canada: very dry and hot from May to October, with summer dust storms. CIA Factbook: hot dry summers June–August; rainy coastal winters December–February; snow or sleet periodically in Damascus. A walking week is easier outside that May–October window. Security does not follow the calendar: the UK FCDO records bombings in central Damascus in July 2026.

There is no month when Syria becomes a normal holiday.

As of 17 September 2026, the US (Level 4, 11 December 2025), UK, Canada, and Australia still advise against all travel. Canada’s Syria page was updated 9 September 2026. The UK FCDO page we opened is still current on 17 September 2026. Weather can make a walking week easier or harder. It does not switch the advisory off.

This page is season and packing. The week itself: A 7-day Syria itinerary. Whether to go at all: Is Syria worth visiting in 2026?. Risk file: Is Syria safe to visit in 2026?.

We are not printing a city-by-city monthly thermometer. Climate blogs do that. The numbers below are named sources opened today, mostly national or governorate climatology, not a Damascus forecast for your Tuesday.

Official season lines (what they actually said)

Source (retrieved 17 September 2026) Season line What you do with it
Canada, Natural disasters and climate Weather is very dry and hot from May to October. Sand and dust storms may occur during the summer months. Winds can blow for days; driving gets hard; dust can cause respiratory problems. Do not plan a long desert road in that window. If a storm is on, Canada says stay indoors, close windows, and be ready to cut the trip short.
Canada, same section Drought in recent years. Torrential rains and heavy flooding also occur (infrequent). Roads may become impassable. Winter rain is not “cosy.” It can strand an overland day.
CIA World Factbook, climate Mostly desert; hot, dry, sunny summers (June to August); mild, rainy winters (December to February) along the coast; cold weather with snow or sleet periodically in Damascus. Dust storms and sandstorms listed as natural hazards. Matches Canada’s heat window, with a tighter summer core. Damascus snow is periodic, not a season you book for.
Weathering Risk Climate Impact Profile (climatology 1991–2020) National average mean 18.75°C; warmest monthly mean July 29.95°C; coolest January 7.03°C. Damascus governorate: annual mean 14.40°C, January monthly mean 4.61°C, recorded minimum about 0°C. Latakia (wettest named region) 777.83 mm a year, dry season May–October. Interior desert: Deir ez-Zor 180.91 mm a year. These are national and governorate means, not street-level highs. July is the hot month in the series. January is the cold month. Coast wet; east dry.
UK FCDO Earthquakes are a risk. Extreme-weather pointer. Ramadan changes shop and restaurant hours and can tighten dress. Season is not only heat. A tremor and a fasting month are calendar facts too.

Canada’s May–October line and the CIA’s June–August line overlap. They do not contradict. Canada is wider. CIA names the summer core and the coastal winter rain.

Best month to visit Syria

There is no prize month.

Blogs pick April and October because those sit between winter rain and high summer. We will not invent the temperatures they print. What we can say from the table:

  • May–October is Canada’s dry-hot, dust-storm window. A Damascus walking week is still possible. It is a heat-and-dust week, not a mild one.
  • June–August is the CIA summer core. Weathering Risk’s national series peaks in July. The UK FCDO’s 7 July 2026 IEDs outside the Four Seasons and the tourism ministry, and the 2 July 2026 café bombing, sat inside that core. Heat and a security headline can share a week.
  • December–February is CIA’s rainy coastal winter, with periodic snow or sleet in Damascus. Canada’s flooding line sits here more than in August. Mountain roads above 1,000 m are a snow problem (next section).
  • The months on either side of those cores — roughly March–April and November, plus early May / late October if you accept Canada’s wider heat window — are the ones that are not named as the hot-dry peak or the coastal rainy winter. That is a gap in the official sentences. It is not a promise of 22°C.

If your dates cannot move, go in the month you have and pack for it. If they can move, pull the walking week out of May–October when you can, and out of a Ramadan you do not want to navigate. Next Ramadan, on Canada’s page, is expected around 7 February 2027.

The itinerary does not change with the month: Damascus-heavy, Aleppo optional. A 7-day Syria itinerary.

Does it snow in Syria?

Yes, in the places the sources name. No, as a ski-holiday plan.

Western mountains, above about 1,000 m: Weathering Risk, opened 17 September 2026: winter precipitation frequently falls as snow, with high humidity, snow, and fog common. The Anti-Lebanon range, including Mount Hermon (2,814 m), is the high ground in that profile.

Damascus: CIA Factbook: snow or sleet periodically. That is the city sentence we can source. Weathering Risk’s Damascus governorate January mean of 4.61°C (1991–2020) is cold enough for sleet; it is not a snowfall count. We are not inventing “two snow days a year.”

Coast: CIA’s coastal winter is mild and rainy, not a snow belt. Latakia’s climatology in Weathering Risk is winter rain, then a May–October dry season.

Snow does not make the desert safe. The UK FCDO still flags unexploded weapons off-road, including in the Syrian desert. A white morning in the Anti-Lebanon is not a reason to walk off the tarmac.

Weather year round

Syria is not one climate.

Weathering Risk describes a Mediterranean strip on the coast (hot dry summers, cool wet winters), semi-arid to arid interior, and a dry east. National precipitation 1991–2020: 294.84 mm a year. That average hides Latakia at 777.83 mm and Deir ez-Zor at 180.91 mm.

Band What the sources describe Tourist meaning
Coast (Latakia, Tartus) CIA: mild, rainy Dec–Feb. Weathering Risk: wettest in winter; dry May–October. Milder summers than the interior in the same profile. This page still does not schedule a coast week: other airports are closed (FCDO), and the road is a risk day.
Damascus / western interior CIA: periodic snow or sleet. Weathering Risk: Damascus governorate cooler than the eastern desert (annual mean 14.40°C vs Deir ez-Zor 20.44°C). The walking week lives here. Pack a layer in winter. Pack for heat in Canada’s May–October window.
Aleppo / northern interior Mixed semi-arid in Weathering Risk’s interior-plains description. Same packing logic as Damascus. The Aleppo decision is access and the road, not climate: Is Aleppo safe to visit in 2026?.
East / desert Weathering Risk: Deir ez-Zor driest named total; June–September monthly precipitation under 5 mm in that series. CIA: dust and sandstorms. Canada: summer dust storms. Not the first itinerary. Palmyra sits in desert country UNESCO describes as an oasis north-east of Damascus. Skip it as a scheduled day unless access is confirmed this month.

Do not use a national July mean of 29.95°C as your Old City afternoon. Interior lows and desert highs diverge. The point of the number is the shape of the year, not a booking thermometer.

Ramadan, earthquakes, dust — calendar overlays

Ramadan. UK FCDO: check opening hours; hotels that serve food in fasting hours may screen you from guests who are fasting; dress codes can be read more tightly; fasting brings tiredness in the late afternoon. Canada dates the next lunar month around 7 February 2027. That is winter plus fasting, not a beach week. Pack the same modest set: What to wear in Syria.

Earthquakes. FCDO: high-magnitude quakes are a risk. Canada records the February 2023 earthquakes that hit northern Syria, with aftershocks and damaged buildings. UNESCO’s Aleppo and Krak files still talk about post-earthquake work. A standing wall can still be a worksite.

Dust storms. Canada: summer, stay in, be ready to cancel the day’s road. CIA lists dust and sandstorms as hazards. This is why May–October is not only “hot.”

Security. It does not holiday in April. The FCDO’s 2026 Damascus examples are July. Pick the month for heat and rain. Then read the advisory the week you fly. Entry and seats: Syria visa requirements, flights to Syria. A first night: How to book hotels in Syria. What a first day in the capital actually is: What to do in Damascus.

Mistakes that pick the wrong month

  • Treating “best time” as “the advisory is lighter.”
  • Copying a 12-month temperature table from a climate blog and calling it sourced.
  • Booking July for Palmyra because the sky is clear. Desert UXO does not care about sunshine.
  • Expecting Damascus snow as a tourist product.
  • Arriving in Ramadan without checking restaurant hours.
  • Packing only resort clothes for May–October.
  • Adding the coast because summer is “beach season” on a tour page.

How this page was put together

Meet Locale editorial. Opened on 17 September 2026: Canada’s Syria climate section (May–October heat, dust, drought, flooding; Ramadan date), UK FCDO travel advice and safety (earthquakes, Ramadan, July 2026 Damascus attacks), and the Weathering Risk Syria Climate Impact Profile (1991–2020 national and governorate means; snow above 1,000 m). The CIA World Factbook climate sentence (June–August heat; December–February coastal rain; periodic Damascus snow or sleet) is the Factbook climate field; the live cia.gov HTML timed out on this retrieval, so that line is cross-checked against Weathering Risk, not treated as a page we rendered. We did not invent a monthly high for Damascus.

FAQ

What is the best time to visit Syria?

As of 17 September 2026, there is no safe season. Canada says the weather is very dry and hot from May to October, with summer dust storms. The CIA Factbook names hot dry summers June–August and rainy coastal winters December–February. A Damascus walking week is easier outside that May–October window. The UK, US, Canada, and Australia still advise against all travel in every month. The UK FCDO records bombings in central Damascus in July 2026.

What is the best month to visit Syria?

There is no official best month. Canada’s dry-hot window is May–October. The CIA’s summer core is June–August. December–February is the CIA coastal rainy winter, with periodic snow or sleet in Damascus. The months that sit outside those named cores are a gap in the official sentences, not a forecast of mild days. If your dates can move, pull a walking week out of May–October. If they cannot, pack for the month you have.

Does it snow in Syria?

Yes in the western mountains. A climate profile opened on 17 September 2026 (Weathering Risk, 1991–2020 climatology) says that above about 1,000 m, winter precipitation frequently falls as snow. The CIA World Factbook says Damascus gets cold weather with snow or sleet periodically. The coast is described as mild and rainy in winter, not as a snow belt. This is not a ski-holiday plan.

What is Syria weather year round?

Coastal Mediterranean in the west (hot dry summers, cool wet winters), drier interior, desert in the east. Weathering Risk’s 1991–2020 national mean is 18.75°C, peaking in July (29.95°C) and bottoming in January (7.03°C). Latakia is the wettest named region in that profile (777.83 mm a year, dry May–October); Deir ez-Zor is the driest named (180.91 mm). Canada separately flags May–October heat and summer dust storms. Those are climatology and embassy lines, not a 12-month city forecast.

Is it cold or hot in Syria?

Both, by month and by region. CIA: hot, dry, sunny summers June–August; mild rainy coastal winters December–February; periodic snow or sleet in Damascus. Weathering Risk: national July mean 29.95°C and January mean 7.03°C for 1991–2020; Damascus governorate is cooler than the eastern desert. Canada: very dry and hot from May to October. Pack a layer in winter and loose covering clothes in the heat window.

Can you visit Syria in winter?

Yes, as a walking week in Damascus, if you already accept the advisory. December–February is the CIA rainy season on the coast, with periodic snow or sleet in Damascus and frequent snow above 1,000 m. Canada says torrential rain and flooding, though infrequent, can close roads. Count a 15-day airport stamp and do not night-drive. Next Ramadan is expected around 7 February 2027 on Canada’s page — check hours.

Is summer too hot to visit Syria?

Canada calls May–October very dry and hot and warns about summer dust storms. The CIA names June–August as the hot dry summer. Weathering Risk’s national series peaks in July. People still walk the Old City in those months; it is a heat-and-dust week, not a mild one. The UK FCDO’s July 2026 Damascus bombings sat in the same season. Summer is not a reason to add Palmyra or the coast.

Does Ramadan change the best time to visit Syria?

It changes hours, not the advisory. The UK FCDO says shops and restaurants may alter opening times, hotels that serve food while people fast may separate you, and dress codes can be read more tightly. Canada expects Ramadan around 7 February 2027. That is a winter fasting month. Pack modest clothes and patience. It is not a closed season.
