Places in Syria That Are Open Now

This is an open/closed sheet, not a ranking.

The query people type is “best places to visit in Syria.” The useful answer in September 2026 is which of those names are receiving visitors, on whose word, as of when — and which rows are still unconfirmed this week. UNESCO’s 2026 World Heritage Committee kept all six Syrian properties on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Danger-listed is not the same as closed. Closed is a door.

Open, partial, inhabited, or unconfirmed

How to read a row: Open means a named official or a live city said visitors were being received on that date. Partial means a qualified official line (Palmyra’s wall) plus unfinished clearing. Inhabited means people live there and a tourism desk talks about visitors; it is not a ticket. Unconfirmed this week means we opened no hours we will print as a promise.

UNESCO Danger is not a padlock

All six inscribed Syrian properties remain on the Danger list after the 2026 Committee (48.COM). Damascus, Aleppo, Bosra, Palmyra, Crac des Chevaliers / Qal’at Salah El-Din, and the Ancient Villages of Northern Syria. The Committee can commend restoration and still retain the listing. Krak is the example: SANA’s antiquities head says tourists are back; UNESCO says Crac made progress and the serial property stays listed because the other castle has not met the same bar.

The Ancient Villages of Northern Syria (the “dead cities”) are not a row above. We did not open a 2026 visitor line we trust. Leave them off this week’s plan.

Best places to go, best things to do, best cities

Those are the same decision. They are not extra URLs.

Best places to go — if you are already in the country — are the rows marked open or visitable: Damascus Old City first, Aleppo if the road or ALP seat says so, then a day that the table still supports. Palmyra is the name listicles put second. On this sheet it is partial, with surroundings still being cleared as of 1 September 2026. Krak and Bosra have dated SANA visitor lines; they are still Danger-listed, and they are not a first-week default.

Best things to do in practice: walk Damascus Old City. Then decide whether Aleppo, Maaloula, or a coast night is a second move. Eating is a feed question. We will not print a restaurant ranking that goes stale.

Best cities on current occupancy: Damascus. Aleppo is the second city, not a quieter twin (Is Aleppo safe to visit?). Latakia and Tartus are coastal cities with their own March 2025 file. Homs is a road, not a prize. Do not add a third city because a listicle had ten slots.

Mistakes that turn a list into a wasted stamp

• Building a 10–14 day loop from a May listicle and discovering Palmyra is a clearance site.
• Driving to Bosra without asking whether the south’s picture that morning includes Suwayda spillover.
• Assuming UNESCO “in Danger” means the Umayyad is locked. It does not. Assuming it means the Umayyad is safe. It does not.
• Night roads (FCDO).
• Photographing demining, checkpoints, or the Tartus port.
