Tourist SIM and eSIM in Syria

As of 17 September 2026, Airalo does not sell a Syria eSIM: the destination URL returned 404, and Menalink does not list Syria. Buy a local Syriatel or MTN line after the entry stamp. Syriatel’s registration page accepts a foreign passport with a new Syrian stamp. Airport kiosks close on late flights; a city service centre is the reliable desk. This is not legal advice. Confirm with the operator before you rely on a number.

Not legal or medical advice. Rules change. Verify with Syria authorities or your embassy before you fly. Last checked: 17 September 2026.

Do not buy an Airalo “Syria” plan before you fly. There isn’t one.

On 17 September 2026, airalo.com/syria-esim returned HTTP 404. Airalo’s own Menalink pack for the Middle East and North Africa lists 15 countries. Syria is not among them. Jordan and Lebanon are. That is why a Beirut or Amman eSIM dies at Masnaa or Nassib.

What works is a local Syriatel or MTN line, after the stamp. Syriatel’s registration page (opened the same day) lists a valid foreign passport with a new Syrian entry stamp as accepted ID for Arab and foreign customers. No stamp, no line. Buy it after immigration, not in the jetway.

Western governments still advise against all travel. The UK FCDO also says electricity, internet, and cellular service are intermittent. A local SIM is maps and WhatsApp, not cover. Seats into DAM: flights to Syria. The stamp itself: Syria visa on arrival 2026.

Which product you actually need

Three things get sold under “eSIM Syria.” Only one of them is a tourist line inside the country.

Product What it is Use it?
Airalo / Holafly-style “Syria eSIM” from a global app Often does not exist. Airalo’s Syria URL was 404 this week. Menalink skips Syria. No, until the app’s own country list names Syria.
Syriatel Travel eSIM (SyriatelTraveleSim.com) Syriatel’s own page: data for Syriatel customers travelling abroad, paid with Syriatel Cash, activated by QR. Check *#06# for an EID. No, if you are flying into Damascus. That product is for Syrians leaving.
Local prepaid SIM or local eSIM at a Syriatel or MTN service centre Physical SIM or a QR from the operator, registered against your passport and entry stamp. MTN’s public launch date for eSIM at service centres was 19 May 2025. Syriatel publishes an eSIM product page. Yes. This is the line.

Niche resellers list Syria eSIMs from brands you have not heard of. Coverage and whether they are actually on Syriatel or MTN radio varies. If you buy one before you fly, keep it as a backup and still budget time for a local desk. Do not treat a $8 “Syria 1GB” tile as the plan.

Airport desk vs city branch

Syriatel’s own location list includes Damascus International Airport as a service centre. Field practice in 2026: the kiosks sit in arrivals after passport control, bags, and customs, before the public doors. Hours are irregular. Late and overnight flights often find the desk closed. Curb touts will offer “activation in the car.” Do not hand them the passport.

The reliable desk is an official city branch the next morning. Neighbourhoods people actually use for this: Shaalan, Mezzeh, and around Bab Touma. Syriatel says purchase runs through 26 service centres, “Syriatel Boutique” shops, and authorised distributors. For a foreign passport, prefer a branded service centre over a random phone stall that cannot finish national registration.

Registration has been taking on the order of 15–60 minutes when the system is up. It can take longer. Do not schedule a museum for the same hour.

What to bring

Syriatel’s published ID list for foreigners is short and specific:

Item Why
Passport with a fresh Syrian entry stamp (or a visa attached) Syriatel item 10 on the registration page, retrieved 17 September 2026. Arab and foreign customers.
Unlocked phone Dual-SIM or eSIM-capable if you want to keep your home number. Dial *#06# and look for an EID if you want a local eSIM.
A written local address Hotel or apartment. Some desks have asked.
Cash Bundles are quoted in Syrian pounds or dollars depending on the desk. Cards are not how most of the country pays (UK FCDO).
Patience, and a photo of the passport on your phone Some branches have asked for a picture. Cheap to have.

Syriatel’s same page lists Syrian IDs, expired Syrian passports with a new entry stamp, Lebanese ID with a Syrian entry visa, and others. Those rows are not your row. Use the foreign-passport line.

We are not printing a USD price. Tourist bundles quoted on the open web this year have sat in a wide band, including a 10GB local-eSIM figure around USD 35 from one operator page. The window will tell you a different number tomorrow. Ask the desk, get a receipt, keep the QR paper if they issue an eSIM.

Syriatel or MTN?

Both exist. MTN’s site is live in 2026 (mtn.com.sy). Syriatel is the broader-coverage name people in Damascus still carry. MTN is often the cheaper city option in field reports. Head out of town and Syriatel is the safer default. For an Old City week, either branded desk that will register a foreign passport is fine. Do not mix a curb stall with “the same as Syriatel.”

WhatsApp, maps, and light video calls are what a 4G city signal actually supports. Evening congestion is real. The FCDO already warned you that cellular service drops. Download offline maps before you leave the branch.

A Lebanon or Jordan eSIM from Airalo will not roam you across the land border. Plan a Syrian line on the Syrian side.

After it works

Scratch-card top-ups sit in small shops under the operator logo. Once the line is registered, recharging is ordinary. Keep the receipt from the first desk; you may need it if the line dies and you go back.

If the airport kiosk was closed, you can survive one night on hotel Wi-Fi and do the branch in the morning. That is better than a tout.

Mistakes that leave you without a signal

  • Buying Airalo Menalink because it says “Middle East.” Syria is not on the 15-country list.
  • Activating Syriatel Travel eSIM thinking it is a tourist line in Damascus. It is roaming for Syrians going out.
  • Trying to register before you have an entry stamp.
  • Handing a passport to someone on the arrivals curb.
  • Paying a reseller for a Syria eSIM and not keeping a local-desk backup.
  • Scheduling the Old City walk and the SIM in the same hour.

How this page was put together

Meet Locale editorial. Opened on 17 September 2026: Syriatel’s registration and eSIM pages, Syriatel’s Travel eSIM page, airalo.com/syria-esim (404), Airalo’s Menalink country list, and mtn.com.sy. Airport-kiosk hours, branch neighbourhoods, and wait times are counter practice from people who registered a foreign passport in 2026. A clerk can change the bundle tomorrow.

Post which operator took your passport, whether the airport desk was staffed, and how long registration took — the practicalities topic or the Syria feed. Meet Locale is a community for travellers and residents, not a dating app.

FAQ

Does Airalo work in Syria?

Not as of 17 September 2026. airalo.com/syria-esim returned HTTP 404. Airalo’s Menalink Middle East and North Africa pack lists 15 countries and does not include Syria. A Jordan or Lebanon Airalo plan will not carry you across Masnaa or Nassib. Buy a local Syriatel or MTN line after you have an entry stamp.

Can tourists buy a Syriatel or MTN SIM?

Yes, after you have a Syrian entry stamp. Syriatel’s registration page lists a valid foreign passport with a new entry stamp as accepted ID for Arab and foreign customers. Bring the passport to an official service centre. This is not legal advice; the desk can still refuse a given passport.

Can I buy a SIM at Damascus Airport?

Sometimes. Syriatel lists Damascus International as a service centre. In 2026 the kiosks, when staffed, sit in arrivals after customs and before the public exit. Late flights often find the desk closed. Do not hand your passport to curb touts. A city branch in Shaalan, Mezzeh, or near Bab Touma the next morning is the reliable path.

Is there eSIM in Syria?

Local eSIM, yes, at operator service centres. MTN’s public launch date was 19 May 2025. Syriatel publishes an eSIM product page. They give you a QR on paper; keep it. International travel-app eSIMs for Syria are thin: Airalo had no Syria destination this week. Syriatel’s Travel eSIM is for Syrians roaming abroad, not for visitors flying in.

What documents do I need for a Syrian SIM?

A passport with a fresh Syrian entry stamp, an unlocked phone, and usually a local address. Syriatel publishes that foreign-passport-plus-stamp rule. Some desks have asked for a photo of the passport. Cash for the bundle. No stamp, no line.

Syriatel or MTN for a tourist?

Either branded service centre that will register a foreign passport. Syriatel is the broader-coverage name in Damascus; MTN is often cheaper in the city in 2026 field reports. For an Old City week, pick the desk that is open. Do not buy from an unbranded stall that cannot finish national registration.

Will my Lebanon eSIM work in Syria?

No. Airalo’s Menalink list includes Lebanon and Jordan and omits Syria. Treat the land border as a new network. Register a Syrian line after the Syrian stamp.

How much is a tourist SIM in Syria?

It depends on the desk and the day, and it is often quoted in Syrian pounds. Open-web tourist bundles in 2026 have sat in a wide US-dollar band, including a 10GB local-eSIM figure around USD 35 on one operator page. We are not treating that as a price list. Ask the service centre, pay cash, keep the receipt. How to carry the notes: [Syria currency, cash, and cards](/guides/syria-currency-cash-cards).
