What to Do in Damascus

Walk the Old City. That is the trip. The rest of Damascus is for sleeping, SIM cards, and getting out.

UNESCO inscribed the Ancient City of Damascus in 1979 (World Heritage list 20). It has sat on the World Heritage in Danger list since 2013. The World Heritage Committee kept it there in 2024 (46 COM 7A.29) and again in 2026 (48 COM 7A.15). You are not walking a restored theme park. You are walking a listed, still-listed-in-danger city that people actually use.

The US (Level 4, 11 December 2025), UK, Canada, and Australia still advise against all travel. Markets, hotels, and religious sites are on the UK FCDO’s target list. The same FCDO page records bombings in central Damascus in July 2026, including outside the Four Seasons and the tourism ministry. Using this as a city guide

This page is the Old City walk. It is not a five-day brochure and not a hotel ranking.

Get in. Fly Damascus (DAM). The UK FCDO, opened 17 September 2026, says Damascus airport is operating some international flights; other Syrian airports stay closed except limited service at Aleppo. How many days. Two walking days cover the UNESCO Ancient City if the doors run. Azm Palace sits on that loop. The National Museum does not; it is west of the walls, a separate morning. A first week that also tries Aleppo, Krak, or Palmyra is a country itinerary, not a Damascus errand: A 7-day Syria itinerary.

The map is a sequence. We will not publish a fake map image. The table below is the decision: which gate, which building, what that is not.

One loop, not a top ten

Do this on the first full day if the morning’s picture is quiet enough to go out. It is walkable. You do not need a driver inside the walls.

Stay on paved streets. The FCDO still flags unexploded weapons off-road and in ruined buildings. The Old City lanes are not the desert, and they are still not a place to climb into a destroyed block for a photograph.

Umayyad Mosque: hours, dress, money

Public listings opened on 17 September 2026 do not agree. That disagreement is the fact. The door is the timetable.

Modest dress. Shoulders and knees covered. Full packing, beaches, men and women: What to wear in Syria as a traveller. Field practice at the tourist entrance: women are often handed a robe (and sometimes a scarf) at the door. Bring your own if you would rather not wear theirs. Men in shorts have been turned back. Photography in the courtyard has been allowed when it is respectful; do not shoot people praying.

Entry money: listings disagree here too — free, a donation, or a fee for foreign non-Muslims quoted this year around 25,000 SYP. Carry small cash. Do not argue a number you read on a phone.

The mosque is an active place of worship. You are a guest. If a section is roped for prayer, it is not a viewpoint.

Al-Hamidiyah, then food without a fake list

Al-Hamidiyah is the covered souq that runs toward the mosque. It is open as a working market, not a museum corridor. Damascus shop hours were unified toward an evening close in late 2025; listings put ordinary shopping around a 21:00 finish, with some restaurants later. Fuel-station kiosks run longer. That is city practice, not a statute. Ask your hotel what time the metal shutters actually come down the night you arrive.

This page does not rank restaurants. Named kitchens go stale, and we will not invent a table from a tour brochure. Dishes and where a tourist actually eats: What food is Syria known for?. National Museum and Azm Palace are not the same trip

DGAM’s August 2025 museum-structure note lists them as different institutions. Treat them that way on the ground.

Azm is a courtyard palace you can add to the Old City walk if the ticket window is open. The National Museum is a separate morning. We did not find a DGAM fee circular that we could print as a statute. Carry cash. Ask at the desk.

Bab Touma and the lanes around it are for walking and supper, not for a checklist. English appears more than it did in a closed decade. That is occupancy, not a tourist-police bubble.

What Damascus is not

It is not a base for Palmyra “if we leave at 5am.” Distances, permits, and unexploded ordnance are a different decision. If Palmyra is why you booked, ask someone who went this month before you add the hours.

It is not Aleppo. Aleppo is a second city with its own airport and its own file: Is Aleppo safe to visit in 2026?. Do not treat a quiet Damascus morning as a forecast for the north.

It is not a night-driving town. The FCDO flags night roads. Inside the Old City, walking after shop-close is a local call you make with someone who lives there, not with a blog.

Mistakes that waste the first day

• Building the morning around a mosque hour you copied from a list that disagrees with two others.
• Shorts at the Umayyad door.
• Paying for a citadel interior that is not open.
• Adding Palmyra because a “things to do in Syria” page stacked it under Damascus.
• Treating Al-Hamidiyah as the whole city and missing the lanes behind it.
• Treating the National Museum as a detour from the souq. It is west of the walls.
• Photographing checkpoints or ruined interiors.
• Eating from a ranking we did not verify. We did not publish one.
