Is Aleppo Safe to Visit in 2026?

Aleppo is not the quiet twin of Damascus.

The four Western advisories that cover Syria cover Aleppo too. US State is Level 4, do not travel, and says no part of the country is safe from violence. The UK, Canada, and Australia tell their citizens not to go. Licensed operators put Aleppo back on itineraries in late January 2026. Those two facts sit in different columns. They do not cancel each other.

Using this as an Aleppo travel guide

This file is the second-city decision. It is not a remake of the country safety page and not a seven-day brochure.

Get in. Some flights serve ALP; the UK FCDO and Canada both describe limited commercial service. Confirm the carrier and the visa-on-arrival boarding catch: Can you fly to Syria?. How many days. One full day if the citadel and a restored souq section are both running. Two if a door is shut and you wait. The National Museum in Aleppo is listed closed. A country week that starts in Damascus is a different page: A 7-day Syria itinerary.

What is visitable. Citadel and souq rows below use sources opened 17 September 2026. Hours and a ticket price appear only where an official page stated them. None did, for the citadel, today.

Advisory vs itinerary (Aleppo only)

Do not pick Aleppo because Damascus had the July 2026 headlines. No official page we opened scores Aleppo safer. The July bombings were in the capital. Aleppo’s file is reconstruction, an earthquake in February 2023, unexploded weapons in the countryside, and the same nationwide terrorism and kidnap language.

Can you visit the Aleppo Citadel?

Yes, on some days. As of 17 September 2026 it is still standing. It is damaged. Visitors were walking it in July.

Xinhua’s 30 July 2026 feature published photographs taken 20 July 2026: people on the site, the main entrance, aerial views of the mound. Mohammad Nour Habbak, director of Aleppo Citadel, told Xinhua the fortress “has preserved its overall architectural layout.” Collapsed masonry, fractured arches, and restoration scaffolding remain part of the landscape. That is the answer to “is it still standing”: yes. It is not a rubble pile. It is not an undamaged replica.

SANA, carried by Arab News on 2 January 2026, said the citadel reopened to visitors on 27 September 2025 after months of restoration. AKDN’s own page dated 26 August 2025 — still the latest AKDN note we opened today — records a new Aga Khan Trust for Culture phase at the main entrance: reinforcement, stone grouting, no wholesale replacement of original stone. UNESCO’s state-of-conservation file records post-earthquake work at the main gate, defence tower, and stair-step bridge.

Allow a few hours if the interior is running. Stay on the marked paths. Do not climb damaged fabric for a photograph.

What is visitable this week

Citadel detail is the section above. The rows below are the rest of a first Aleppo day, sourced 17 September 2026.

Stay on paved streets in the inhabited core. The UK FCDO still flags landmines and unexploded weapons off-road, at the edge of roads, in destroyed buildings, woods, orchards, and the desert. Aleppo’s countryside is not a day-hike. Do not climb into a ruined block for a photograph.

The February 2023 earthquake hit a city already damaged in the war. UNESCO’s 2026 decision still asks for emergency stabilization of monuments that remain at risk. A wall that looks recently pointed can still be a worksite. If the fabric looks unstable, walk away.

Who should skip Aleppo even if they do Damascus

Damascus can make sense as a narrow week and Aleppo still not.

• You will not travel against a do-not-travel advisory. Then both cities are a no — and it is a clean no.
• You need the museum. It is listed closed.
• You planned the Damascus–Aleppo road as a scenic transfer. It is a risk day.
• You wanted a finished citadel. The main entrance is under AKTC restoration.
• You cannot get insurance that pays, and you cannot self-insure.

If three of those are you, stay in Damascus or do not go.

How you get there — and the road in between

Two paths. They are not interchangeable.

Fly into ALP. Canada and the FCDO both describe limited commercial service. Turkish Airlines’ own Syria page sells Aleppo. Confirm visa-on-arrival boarding in writing; the airline catch is the same as Damascus. Other Syrian airports stay closed.

Overland from Damascus. This is a separate day’s risk assessment, not a Google Maps hop. The FCDO: road travel is dangerous (maintenance, checkpoints, unexploded weapons, night driving). Fighting has closed roads before. A licensed driver who already runs that road is a safety tool, not a vibe. If the morning picture is bad, skip the city. You still have Damascus.

Do not treat a quiet Old Damascus morning as a forecast for the north.

Is it dangerous, or is it “cleared”?

Dangerous, in the language of the four advisories. US State: terrorism, kidnapping, crime, armed conflict; US citizens are a specific kidnap target. FCDO: terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks, including in major cities; kidnap threat is very high throughout Syria.

“Cleared” on a tour page means that operator is willing to take paying guests into a defined loop that week. It does not mean UNESCO took Aleppo off the Danger list (it did not, in 2026). It does not mean your insurer will pay. It does not mean the countryside is walked.

Can you travel to Aleppo? Physically, yes, on some days, by air or by road. Should your government, your insurer, or a consular desk back that? The pages we opened say no.

Mistakes that turn a second city into a worse day

• Choosing Aleppo to “avoid” Damascus headlines. The advisory is nationwide.
• Building the day around the museum.
• Treating citadel hours copied from a list as a booking. No official timetable was on a page we opened today; restoration is live at the entrance.
• Driving the Damascus road at night, or without a driver who already knows the checkpoints.
• Walking into ruined fabric or off the tarmac (UXO, FCDO).
• Photographing checkpoints or security forces.
• Expecting a tourist-police bubble because a citadel ticket exists.
