Can You Get Travel Insurance for Syria?

You can ask. Many consumer policies will say no.

As of 17 September 2026, the UK FCDO, US State, Canada, and Australia still advise against all travel to Syria. The FCDO states that your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against its advice. That is the starting fact, not a sales pitch. This page is not insurance, legal, or medical advice. Can you get travel insurance for Syria?

Sometimes, if a specialist product still names Syria on the day you buy. Often no, if you mean the annual policy that covers France.

We opened consumer pages, not a broker’s back office.

There are specialist high-risk brokers in the market. We did not verify a live Syria certificate from one today. A blog that says “IATI is the only company” is wrong as a current fact: IATI’s own comments and 27 August reply say the Syria product is not currently offered through the quote form, and other firms we opened exclude rather than cover. Do not take that slogan to the airport.

What “best travel insurance for Syria” should actually mean

Not a brand. A sentence on letterhead.

Email the insurer, before you pay a ticket:

1. Does this policy name Syria as a covered destination for my travel dates?
2. Does it pay if I travel against a do-not-travel / against-all-travel advisory?
3. Does emergency medical treatment pay in cash-first hospitals?
4. Does medical evacuation and repatriation pay, including to Beirut, Amman, or further?
5. Are war, terrorism, civil unrest, and sanctions excluded?

If they will not put yes on those points in writing, treat cover as absent. Carry cash you can actually spend on a bad day. That is the whole product.

IATI’s blog still quotes medical limits of €10,000,000 (Total Comfort) and €1,000,000 extendable (Star), and “no deductibles.” Those figures are marketing on a page whose comments say you cannot select Syria. Do not buy from a screenshot of that table.

Evacuation is the expensive line

The UK FCDO health page: check that the destination can provide the healthcare you may need, and that you have cover for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation. Emergency services “could be unresponsive.” Healthcare quality has deteriorated; many facilities are damaged or closed; basic medicines can be short.

US State: medical care is not free; credit-card payment is not available in the hospital picture they describe; private and public hospitals often need payment up front. Serious cases may need evacuation to a neighbouring country or a more developed facility.

Smartraveller: evacuation is expensive and hard to organise; Australia will not pay.

Canada: evacuation may be difficult because of the security picture.

A policy that covers “medical” but excludes the destination, war, or travel-against-advice is not an evacuation plan. Neither is a credit card. Neither is the British government from inside Syria (FCDO: no consular support from within Syria). US Embassy Damascus remains suspended.

If you still go without a paying policy

That is a self-insured trip. Say it that way.

• Hospitals want cash (US State).
• You may need a land-out to Beirut or Amman.
• Your government may not lift you out.

Mistakes that leave you uncovered

• Buying an annual “worldwide” policy and assuming Syria is in it.
• Trusting an IATI blog title dated by Google, without opening the comments or attempting a quote.
• Repeating “IATI is the only one.” That sentence was not true as a live sale on 17 September 2026.
• Confusing cancellation cover with medical evacuation.
• Travelling against FCDO advice and discovering the exclusion after a claim.
• Treating US Medicare as overseas cover.
