How to Get a Syria Visa

You need a visa. The work is picking the path that matches your passport, then showing up with the papers that path actually uses.

Western governments still advise against all travel. A stamp is not cover.

Do you need a visa to go to Syria?

Yes, if you are a foreign tourist. US State: a passport and a visa are required to enter. Canada: tourist, business, and student visas are all required. UK FCDO: you must have a visa.

Is Syria visa free? For most passports, no. Syria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reset fees on 6 July 2025 (Decision 128, reported by North Press). Lebanon, Jordan, Malaysia, and Mauritania are fee-exempt in that decision when admitted. Serbia is visa-free. Everyone else pays. An Indian passport is not visa-free. A free neighbour stamp is not a free stamp for a US, UK, EU, or Indian passport.

There is no live official grid on a .gov.sy page we could open today. evisa.sy returned HTTP 500 on 17 September 2026. The UK FCDO, US State, and Smartraveller still mention an online option. Treat those lines as stale until a form actually issues. Do not pay a reseller for an "e-visa."

Four paths — pick one before you buy a ticket

Syrian immigration, a Syrian mission, and the airline desk are three different systems. Use the row that matches the document you will hand over.

If your passport is not in the table, ask the Syria feed with the exact nationality before you pay a fare you cannot refund.

What to bring (every path)

Official pages disagree on how long the passport must last. Use the stricter line that matches your document.

US State also flags a departure tax at Syrian land and sea borders (not for diplomatic passports or children under 11). Budget cash for the way out.

If you hold a US, UK, Canadian, or Indian passport

• United States — Path: the window, if the airline will board you. US State: authorities may issue a tourist visa on arrival at DAM or by land from Lebanon or Jordan. Other visa types need a mission in your country of residence. Washington has not issued visas since 18 March 2014; there is no protecting power in the US handling Syrian visas. Passport: six months, one blank page.
• United Kingdom — Path: usually the window. FCDO still says you must have a visa. Passport: three months after arrival. Israeli or Iranian citizenship, or an Israel stamp: expect refusal. Cash and stamp length: on-arrival sibling.
• Canada — Path: mission first, on Canada's own page (non-Arab nationals cannot get a visa at the border). If a clerk stamps you anyway, that does not rewrite the official line. Register before day 15 if you will stay longer than 14; some travellers need an exit permit (same Canada page).
• India — Path: written pre-approval. Not visa-free. Showing up is not the process. Decision 128 does not put India in the exempt group. The cash band if admitted is about USD 50 on the fee table — that number is not permission. China, Pakistan, and most African passports follow the same pre-approval pattern.

How to apply at a Syrian mission

This is Path two, and Path three when the mission is the office that files your pre-approval.

A Syrian mission checklist we opened on 17 September 2026 (syriaembassy.org) asks tourists for:

• Completed, signed application form, plus a copy
• One recent 2×2 photo on a white background
• Original passport (six months, blank page) plus a copy of the bio page
• Confirmed itinerary or round-trip reservation
• Proof of accommodation in Syria
• If you are not a citizen of the country where you are applying: a copy of a valid residence permit, green card, or visa

Standard processing on that page: about 7–10 business days, longer if there is a security review. Fees vary by nationality; confirm with that mission. Submission is not approval.

Read that list against the fact that Washington is not open. US State: the Syrian embassy in the United States suspended all operations on 18 March 2014, and Syria has no protecting power in the US for consular work. If you live in the US, a "apply at the embassy" plan needs a Syrian mission in another country that is actually processing, or the on-arrival window, or a licensed agent's pre-approval paper. Smartraveller still says contact the nearest embassy or consulate of Syria and mentions an eVisa; the form was down the day we fetched it.

Ask the mission, in writing, whether they are issuing tourist visas this month. Empty websites outlast actual desks. Desk practice in 2026 is that the tourist stamp comes from the window, or from a licensed agent's pre-approval paper for restricted passports — not from a foil in Amman or Beirut. If you hold a Canadian passport, Canada's page still sends you to a mission first; get that yes on paper before you treat the window as your plan.

After you have the stamp

Count the ink. Airport stamps have been 15 days even when a 30-day stay is possible. US State independently quotes about 30 days for US citizens. A 15-day stamp is not a 30-day stay.

Canada's Syria page: if you intend to stay longer than 14 days, register with the Immigration and Passports Office before the 15th day. On a tourist visa, that clock restarts each time you enter. Some travellers need an exit permit from the General Security Department to leave.

Mistakes that waste the application

• Paying for Damascus on a carrier that still wants a visa number, then arguing Timatic at the desk.
• Mixing Canada's pre-mission rule with the US on-arrival note. Follow the page that matches your passport.
• Treating Decision 128's neighbour exemptions as visa-free for everyone.
• Arriving on an Indian, Chinese, Pakistani, or most African passports with no paper.
• Trusting evisa.sy or an e-visa reseller. The government form returned HTTP 500 on 17 September 2026.
• Using the Washington embassy site as if it could take your passport. It has been closed for visas since 2014 (US State).
• Showing an Israel stamp you cannot replace.
• Booking as a journalist on a tourist stamp and expecting a camera to be fine.
• Staying past day 14 without registering (Canada's page).
