Can You Visit Maaloula?

Yes, as a living town — if the morning’s road and the convent door agree. Not as a ticketed park with hours we can print today.

Syria’s state news agency on 11 April 2026 quoted Mohammed al-Qassim, director of Damascus Countryside Tourism, calling Maaloula’s rocky passage one of the region’s prominent tourist and heritage sites, with service work still under way. SANA’s 5 July 2026 photo dispatch still describes the town as inhabited, with rock-cut houses, early monasteries, and Aramaic in use. That is a current-access line from the tourism desk. It is not a printed timetable for Mar Taqla.

The US (Level 4, 11 December 2025), UK, Canada, and Australia still advise against all travel. Religious sites sit on the UK FCDO’s target list. A Qalamoun day is still travel against those pages. Public pages disagree on whether Maaloula is “open.” That disagreement is the fact. We do not invent a door time.

How far from Damascus?

Only with figures we can source. They do not match. Both stay on the page.

We are not averaging 56 and 65. Driving time depends on checkpoints and the mountain road. Budget a full day from a Damascus hotel door if you also stop at a convent staircase. Night driving is a named FCDO risk. Come back before dark.

Aramaic

Autocomplete asks. SANA (April and July 2026, and a 11 December 2025 feature) calls Maaloula one of a handful of places where Aramaic — the language associated with Jesus in those dispatches — is still spoken, by Christians and Muslims, in daily life and liturgy. The Patriarchate page says Ma‘lula is well-known for preserving Aramaic; inhabitants of Ma‘lula and neighbouring Jib‘adin and Al-Sarkha still use it as a spoken language, heavily mixed with Arabic, and use Arabic with outsiders.

That is a living-language claim from those pages. It is not a promise that a shopkeeper will recite the Lord’s Prayer for a camera. Do not treat residents as exhibits. If someone speaks it in your hearing, that is the visit. If they do not, you still saw the cliff and the convent, or you did not, depending on the door.

Churches

Two names dominate the query fan-out. They are in the same village.

Convent of St Thecla (Mar Taqla / Deir Mar Taqla). Greek Orthodox, cliffside, grotto shrine. The Patriarchate: nuns live there; liturgies on Sundays and feast days; visitors are received as pilgrims. Canada: dress conservatively at religious sites. Shoulders and knees. A scarf if a keeper asks. Full packing: What to wear in Syria as a traveller. Do not photograph nuns without leave.

Monastery of Sts Sergius and Bacchus (Mar Sarkis). The Patriarchate locates the Greek Catholic monastery of Sts Sergius and Bacchus (Dayr Mar Sarkis) near the village; the two houses were combined before 1724. We did not open a 2026 hours line for Mar Sarkis. Same rule: the door is the timetable.

The Patriarchate lists other churches in Ma‘lula as mostly ruined. Do not build a checklist of St Barbara and St George from a 2007 reprint.

SANA’s April piece gives the rocky passage about 300 metres long, 20–30 metres deep, about 4 metres wide in places. That is geology copy from a geography professor on a tourism wire. Wear shoes you can walk stone in. It is not a hike into the desert, and it is still not a place to leave the path.

Who should skip it even if they do Damascus

• You will not travel against a do-not-travel advisory. Then Maaloula is a no.
• You need printed convent hours in your hand. We do not have them this week.
• You wanted Palmyra “because we have a driver.” Different road, different UXO file. See the open-now table.
• You cannot walk stairs. Mar Taqla is a climb from the lower lot in every practical description we read; we are not inventing a lift.

Mistakes that waste the day

• Treating “tourism director says visitors come” as a 09:00 opening.
• Printing 56 km or 65 km as if the other figure were an error you should hide.
• Arriving at dusk and driving back in the dark.
• Asking someone to “say something in Jesus’s language” as a party trick.
• Shorts at the convent door.
• Adding Saidnaya, Maaloula, and Krak on the same clock because a listicle stacked them.
