How to Hire a Private Driver in Syria
As of 17 September 2026, hire a car with a driver for day trips and the Aleppo road. The UK FCDO says road travel is dangerous because of poor maintenance, checkpoints, unexploded weapons, and night driving. We will not invent a US-dollar day rate. Get a quote in writing, pay cash, and ask the Syria feed who drove your route this month.

As of 17 September 2026, the useful product is a person who already ran your road this week — checkpoints, fuel, and which door is actually open — not a steering wheel you rented. Operator websites publish day rates. We are not reprinting them. They are sales copy. They move. The live number is whoever drove your route this month.

Palmyra, Bosra, and Krak are not automatic add-ons. Each needs a current-access line from this week: How to visit Palmyra, Can you visit Bosra?, Can you visit Krak des Chevaliers?. If the access page says skip, skip. A driver cannot reopen a site.

How to hire (the sequence)
Do this in order. Stop if the quote will not go on paper.

We will not invent a US-dollar-per-day figure. Operator pages we opened while researching this draft advertised day rates; those pages exist to sell a car. Is it safe to drive through Syria?
Self-drive through Syria is not the tourist product. A hired driver on a paved road you already chose is still not “safe.” It is a way to move with someone who knows today’s checkpoints.

Western governments advise against all travel to Syria. A driver does not cancel that. What a good driver does: knows which booth is open this morning, talks you through it, and turns the car around if the picture is bad. That is why you hire one for Palmyra / Bosra / Krak / the Aleppo road, and why you ask the feed who actually drove — not who advertised.
Suwayda in the south is named by the FCDO as not under the Damascus authorities’ control. Do not treat a southern “scenic” loop as a day trip because a driver said yes in a chat.

What “with a driver” actually means on a tourist day
- Checkpoints. Canada: they sit on the main highways. US State: official and unofficial. The driver handles documents; you keep copies of the passport photo page and visa (UK FCDO). Phones stay down. Do not film the booth.
- UXO. FCDO: populated areas and major routes are largely clear; the risk is off-road. A driver who already knows the day’s line is the point. Walking into a ruined block is not.
- Fuel and cash. Fuel can be scarce and expensive (FCDO). The quote should say who buys it. Carry extra USD anyway.
- Language. English-speaking is a premium some desks sell. It is not required if you have the route written and a pin. It is required if you cannot read a checkpoint instruction.
- Insurance. Ask, in writing, whether medical evacuation pays against a do-not-travel advisory before you treat the car as cover. The safety page is the file for that.

- Paying a day rate you saw on an operator homepage without a written quote for your date and route.
- Leaving Damascus at dusk for Aleppo, Palmyra, or the Jordan road.
- Treating a taxi-app ping as a Palmyra plan.
- Photographing a checkpoint.
- Stepping off the tarmac for a ruin.
- Sending a deposit to a personal account abroad for “the driver.”
- Assuming Palmyra, Bosra, or Krak is open because last month’s blog said so. Read the access page that morning.
