Crossing from Jordan to Syria at Nassib

Yes, the Jordan–Syria border at Jaber–Nassib is open this week. Open is not the same as “the hours you were quoted,” and it is not the same as “Western advice says go.”

The Jordanian side is Jaber (Mafraq Governorate, about 80 km north of Amman on VisitJordan’s own listing). The Syrian side is Nassib (also written Nasib, in Daraa). Same crossing, two names. Do not mix the pins.

Jordan’s Interior Ministry, via Petra on 17 March 2025, said the post would run 24 hours a day from Sunday 23 March 2025, aligned with Al-Omari to Saudi Arabia, after coordination with the Syrian side. Petra again on 15 September 2026: a new yard for about 200 loaded trucks, expanded vehicle and bus lanes for travellers from Syria, and a dedicated passport building for bus passengers, under the Interior Ministry’s 2026–2027 border plan. SANA, reported 10 August 2026: about 2.2 million travellers used Nasib in both directions in the first half of 2026. That volume is regional traffic, including Umrah routing through Jordan — not a Western-tourist safety rating.

The UK FCDO still advises against all travel within 3 km of the Jordan–Syria border. Using Jaber means entering that strip. Canada: avoid all travel within 5 km of Jordan’s Syria border, except Umm Qais. US State’s Jordan page: do not travel to Jordan’s border with Syria. On the Syria side, the same US page says border checkpoints are not safe, and some armed groups try to fund themselves by kidnapping for ransom. The UK FCDO lists border crossings as a terrorist target type and flags southern Syria, including Suwayda, as fragile. Treat Jaber as infrastructure, not as a routine bus stop.

Is the Jordan–Syria border open?

Open on 17 September 2026, at this crossing, for civilian passengers. Confirm the morning you go. Land crossings and airspace may close without notice (Canada’s Syria page; Smartraveller).

Who the crossing is for also disagrees. Use the table; do not pick a winner.

ARK News has older Naseeb files (2018 control; later Captagon seizures). It did not publish a 2026 tourist reopen we could open today. The current civilian claim is Jordan Interior + Petra + SANA, read against the FCDO strip.

Nassib hours (they disagree)

Do not average this. Leave Amman in daylight unless someone who crossed today tells you the night booth is actually stamping.

If you roll up at 01:00 because a ministry circular said “24 hours” and the lights are off, you are stuck in Mafraq. The 24-hour line is a March 2025 Interior decision. VisitJordan had not aligned its table with that decision on the day we opened it.

Amman → Jaber → Nassib → Damascus (the sequence)

Do this in order. Stop if the first item is a no.

Royal Jordanian is the fork, not a decoration. RJ’s 16 January 2025 notice: Amman–Damascus flights from 31 January 2025, four weekly, with a plan for daily from April 2025, plus the daily bus it had already been running from Queen Alia toward Syria. RJ’s travel-requirements page, opened the same day as this draft: non-Syrian passengers to Damascus should carry USD 500–1,000 in new-series notes for the entry visa and fees; cards do not pay the stamp. US Embassy Amman still names RJ 435 / RJ 436 as the Damascus pair it coordinates for immigrant-visa applicants. Search rj.com for your date. If the airline desk will not board visa-on-arrival, the land sequence above is the workaround. If it will, the 25-minute sector is the other product — still not a safety clearance.

What to carry, and what not to argue about

• Cash USD for the Syrian stamp. Cards do not pay it. Amounts by passport: on-arrival sibling. RJ’s own DAM notice is USD 500–1,000 in new notes for non-Syrian passengers — treat that as a packing floor, not as the fee. Why cash still runs the week: Syria currency, cash, and cards.
• The passport you will enter on. Dual nationals: Syria may treat you as Syrian.
• No Israel stamp you cannot replace. UK FCDO: an Israel stamp can mean refusal. Canada: people have been denied because of an Israeli visa, or an Egyptian or Jordanian stamp from an office bordering Israel.
• Water, a power bank, daylight. Queues expand when a booth goes down, and Petra’s 2026 expansion is a response to congestion, not a promise it is gone.
• Keep the camera down at the posts. Phones get taken.

Shared taxis run the Amman–Jaber road. A booked car is simpler with bags. Do not thumb a ride for the last stretch.

Masnaa is the other land door

If you are in Beirut, use Masnaa–Jdeidet Yabous, not Nassib. Same visa product for eligible passports, different hours and a different April 2026 shutdown story. Sequence: Masnaa.

Nassib is the Amman workaround and the Royal Jordanian fallback. Masnaa is the Beirut add-on.

Mistakes that leave you in Mafraq

• Leaving Amman without checking whether the post is actually open that morning.
• Arriving at midnight on a 24-hour claim while VisitJordan still prints 08:00–18:00.
• No cash USD, or worn notes the clerk will not take.
• Mixing Canada’s pre-mission rule with the US on-arrival note.
• Restricted passport, no paper.
• Treating the FCDO 3 km strip as a line you can stand just outside. The booth is the strip.
• Photographing the crossing.
• Treating a Jordanian eSIM as a Syrian line. Register a local SIM after the stamp (tourist SIM).
• Reading SANA’s 2.2 million as “the road is ordinary.”
