Crossing from Lebanon to Syria at Masnaa
As of 17 September 2026, Masnaa–Jdeidet Yabous is open and most leisure passports can stamp a visa on arrival in cash. It closed in early April 2026 and reopened on 9 April (Syrian ports authority), 24-hour civilian transit. Smartraveller: Lebanon–Syria crossings have been hit by clashes and bombings and can close without notice. Carry cash USD. This is not legal advice. Check the crossing the morning you leave Beirut.

Yes, the Lebanon–Syria border at Masnaa is open this week. Open is not the same as “it stays open.”
The Lebanese side is Masnaa (Bekaa). The Syrian side is Jdeidet Yabous. Same crossing, two names. In early April 2026 the post shut because of strike-threat risk. Syria’s General Authority for Land and Sea Ports said civilian transit resumed on Thursday 9 April 2026, and that the post would run 24 hours a day. Smartraveller, retrieved 17 September 2026: land crossings between Syria and Lebanon have been the target of clashes and bombings and could close without notice. Canada says the same for borders generally.
This is the land workaround when an airline desk will not board visa-on-arrival, and the add-on path if you already bought Beirut. Fees, restricted passports, and the airline catch live on Syria visa on arrival 2026. What you do after the stamp: What to do in Damascus.
Is the border between Lebanon and Syria open?
Open on 17 September 2026, at this crossing, for civilian passengers. Confirm the morning you go. The April shutdown is the example, not ancient history.
Hours disagree. Use the table; do not average it.
| Source (retrieved or dated) | Hours claimed | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Syrian General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, 9 April 2026 (ARK News) | 24 hours, civilian transit, after a multi-day suspension | The official Syrian-side claim after reopen. Still check that morning. |
| Tourist-desk practice, 2026 | About 06:00–23:00 | What people actually used most days before the April closure. |
| Syrian-side extension reported Jan–Feb 2025 | 06:00–midnight from 1 February 2025; taxis from 06:00 | Older than the April 2026 24-hour line. Do not treat as current without a check. |
| Lebanese customs notice, 25 April 2026 (trucks / trade) | 07:00–19:00 daily | A cargo window. Do not assume it is your passenger timetable. |
If you arrive at 01:00 on the back of a “24 hours” quote and the booth is dark, you sleep in the Bekaa. Leave Beirut in daylight.
Beirut → Masnaa → Damascus (the sequence)
Do this in order. Stop if the first item is a no.
| Step | Where | What you do | What to have in hand |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Beirut, the night before | Confirm the crossing is open. Ask someone who crossed today, not last month. | Passport valid enough for Syria (US/Canada: six months; UK FCDO: three months after arrival). Cash USD in new notes, more than your visa fee row. Small Lebanese cash for the way back. |
| 1 | Beirut → Masnaa | Taxi or pre-booked car across the Bekaa. Agree the fare before you sit down. | Address of where you will sleep in Damascus. Phone with offline maps; a Lebanese eSIM dies at the line. |
| 2 | Lebanese exit (Masnaa) | Stamp out of Lebanon. | The passport you will enter Syria on. No Israel page you cannot replace (UK FCDO; Canada). |
| 3 | Syrian entry (Jdeidet Yabous) | Visa-on-arrival window for eligible passports. Cash. Stamp. US State: US citizens may be issued a tourist visa by land from Lebanon, about USD 200, about 30 days. | Crisp USD. One spare photo. A ticket out of Syria or back through Lebanon. Ask for the visa on a loose sheet if you do not want a Syria page. |
| 4 | After the stamp | Taxi onward to Damascus. People driving their own vehicle have been paying about USD 100 extra for the car at this crossing. | Receipt with the stamp. You may need it when you exit. |
| 5 | Coming back into Lebanon | Lebanese stamp duty on the Lebanese side — around USD 10–12, or 1,000,000 LBP, in 2026 field practice. | Small cash. The duty is not the Syrian visa. |
US State also flags a departure tax at Syrian land and sea borders (not for diplomatic passports or children under 11). Budget cash for the way out, not only the way in.
Canada’s page still tells non-Arab nationals to get a visa at a mission before travel, not at the border. Some Canadian passports have been stamped at Masnaa anyway. Do not resolve that clash by hoping. Restricted passports (India, China, Pakistan, most of Africa): written pre-approval first.
What to carry, and what not to argue about
- Cash USD for the Syrian stamp. Cards do not pay it. Amounts by passport: on-arrival sibling. Bring extra.
- The passport you will enter on. Dual nationals: Syria may treat you as Syrian. Australia: dual Australian-Syrian nationals cannot enter Lebanon to renew an expired Australian passport; only a valid Australian passport gets you into Lebanon.
- No Israel stamp you cannot replace.
- Water, patience, a power bank. Queues expand when a booth goes down.
- Do not photograph the posts or the uniforms. Phones get taken.
Shared taxis run the Bekaa. Private cars are simpler with luggage. Do not hitch the last kilometres.
FCDO lists border crossings as a terrorist target type. Smartraveller: verify the status of all crossings before you travel. US State: some armed groups try to fund themselves by kidnapping at checkpoints. This is still a border, not a tram stop.
Nassib is the other land door
If you are in Amman, use Nassib–Jaber, not Masnaa. Typical hours reported in 2026: about 08:00–18:00. Same visa product, different queue. Do not mix the two in a GPS pin. The Jordan file: Crossing from Jordan to Syria at Nassib.
Masnaa is the Beirut add-on and the airline-desk workaround from the west. Nassib is the Jordan workaround.
Mistakes that leave you in the Bekaa
- Leaving Beirut without checking whether the post is actually open that morning. It was closed in early April 2026.
- Arriving at midnight on a 24-hour claim.
- No cash USD, or worn notes the clerk will not take.
- Mixing Canada’s pre-mission rule with the US on-arrival note.
- Restricted passport, no paper.
- Photographing the crossing.
- Treating a Lebanese eSIM as a Syrian line. Register a local SIM after the stamp (tourist SIM).
- Forgetting Lebanese cash for the stamp duty on the way back.
How this page was put together
Meet Locale editorial. Official rows opened on 17 September 2026: US State (land visa for US citizens), UK FCDO entry, Canada, Smartraveller on Lebanon–Syria crossings. The 9 April 2026 reopen and 24-hour civilian claim come from the Syrian General Authority for Land and Sea Ports as reported by ARK News. Passenger hours of 06:00–23:00, the Lebanese re-entry duty, and the vehicle extra are counter practice. A booth can close tomorrow.
If you crossed this week, post the hour you queued, what you paid, and whether the Syrian side was actually 24 hours — the transport topic or the Syria feed. Meet Locale is a community for travellers and residents, not a dating app.
FAQ
Is the border between Lebanon and Syria open?
As of 17 September 2026, yes at Masnaa–Jdeidet Yabous for civilian passengers. It closed in early April 2026 and reopened on 9 April (Syrian General Authority for Land and Sea Ports). Smartraveller says Lebanon–Syria crossings have been the target of clashes and bombings and can close without notice. Check the morning you leave Beirut. This is not legal advice.
Can I get a Syria visa on arrival at Masnaa?
Yes, for most leisure passports, in cash US dollars, as of September 2026. US State says US citizens may be issued a tourist visa by land from Lebanon, about USD 200, about 30 days. Canada still tells non-Arab nationals to apply at a mission first. India, China, Pakistan, and most African passports should have written pre-approval. Confirm your row on the visa-on-arrival page.
What are the Masnaa border crossing hours?
They disagree. The Syrian authority said 24-hour civilian transit when it reopened on 9 April 2026. Tourist-desk practice most of 2026 has been about 06:00–23:00. A January 2025 Syrian-side notice said 06:00–midnight. Lebanese customs published 07:00–19:00 in April 2026 for trade traffic. Leave Beirut in daylight and confirm that morning.
How do I get from Beirut to Damascus by land?
Taxi or car from Beirut across the Bekaa to Masnaa. Exit Lebanon, stamp into Syria at Jdeidet Yabous (visa on arrival if eligible, cash USD), then taxi to Damascus. Agree fares before you sit down. Carry more cash than the visa row. A Lebanese eSIM will not roam you across. Check the crossing is open the morning you go.
How much cash do I need at Masnaa?
Enough crisp US dollars for your nationality’s visa stamp — see the on-arrival fee table — plus extra. People driving in have paid about USD 100 extra for the vehicle. Coming back into Lebanon, budget around USD 10–12 or 1,000,000 LBP for the Lebanese stamp duty. US State also flags a Syrian departure tax at land borders. Cards do not pay these windows.
Is Masnaa safe?
It is a working civilian crossing, and it is still a border. The UK FCDO lists border crossings as a terrorist target type. Smartraveller records clashes and bombings at Lebanon–Syria crossings. US State warns that some armed groups try to fund themselves by kidnapping at checkpoints. The April 2026 shutdown is the reminder that “open” can reverse.
Masnaa or Nassib?
Masnaa if you are in Beirut. Nassib–Jaber if you are in Amman. Same visa product for eligible passports, different hours and queues. Typical Nassib hours reported in 2026: about 08:00–18:00. Do not mix the pins.
Can I cross Masnaa with an Israel stamp?
Expect refusal. The UK FCDO says an Israel stamp can mean refusal; Canada says travellers have been denied entry because of an Israeli visa. Replace the passport if you can. Do not test the clerk.
