Visiting Syria During Ramadan

Ramadan in Syria is a calendar, a closed kitchen at lunch, and a tighter dress code. It is not a television season.

As of 17 September 2026, Syria’s last Ramadan began on Thursday 19 February 2026. Al Jazeera, 18 February: religious authorities in Syria announced the holy month would start Thursday, after the crescent was not sighted with Saudi Arabia and several Gulf states (those began Wednesday). Canada’s Syria advisory, opened today: the next lunar month of Ramadan is expected to begin on or around 7 February 2027. Moon-sighting can still move that by a day. Do not lock a non-refundable ticket to an app’s first guess.

In public, between sunrise and sunset, Canada says refrain from eating, drinking, and smoking. The UK FCDO, still current 17 September 2026, adds the tourist mechanics: check opening hours; hotels may screen you from fasting guests if they serve food in fasting hours; follow local dress codes (offence reads higher); fasting causes tiredness in the late afternoon; be patient.

When is Ramadan in Syria?

Dates are local. Syria does not automatically follow Mecca.

Autocomplete also asks “is ramadan tomorrow in syria” and “is today ramadan in syria.” Those are live local questions. This page cannot answer them on a Tuesday in September. Ask the desk the week you fly.

Hours: shops, mosques, the souq

FCDO’s first Ramadan bullet is opening hours. Treat that as the decision, not a timetable we invent.

Daytime. Many restaurants that serve the public stay shut, or serve only behind a screen. Small grocers and bakeries may still sell. A hotel kitchen that feeds guests is the reliable lunch. Ask, the night you arrive, what time food is actually available to non-fasting guests.

Late afternoon. Fasting people are tired. Queues snap. The FCDO’s tiredness line is the practical one: do not pick an argument at 16:00.

After sunset (iftar). The city eats. Streets fill. The UK FCDO lists markets, cafés, restaurants, hotels, and religious sites as possible terrorist targets and tells you to take particular care at periods of national or religious significance. Night. Tarawih prayers run late. The Umayyad is an active mosque, not a light show. Hours already disagree on ordinary days; in Ramadan, treat the door as the timetable. The walking loop: What to do in Damascus.

Suhoor is the pre-dawn meal. You will hear it if you sleep in the Old City. You do not need to join it.

Food: what you eat, and what you do not eat in the street

Canada’s rule is public and daylight: no eating, no drinking (water included), no smoking. A closed bottle in a bag is still a scene if you crack it on Al-Hamidiyah at noon.

Hotel. FCDO: if the hotel serves food or drink in fasting hours, they may separate you from Muslim guests, for example with screens. That is the design, not an insult. Eat there. Do not demand a pavement table.

Iftar. Soup, dates, bread, mezze, then a grill — the same Levantine table, later. Pay cash. Do not wander into a private family spread because it looks photogenic.

Alcohol. A separate law page: Can you drink alcohol in Syria?. In Ramadan daylight, do not. Reuters, 17 March 2026: a woman in Salamiyah (Hama) was arrested for breaking her fast; bakery staff near Damascus were dismissed for the same reason. EUAA: in 2026, sporadic reports of brief detention or dismissal for publicly breaking the fast. Private hotel dining behind a screen is the channel the FCDO already described. The street is not.

Dress: tighter reading, same suitcase

The FCDO’s Ramadan dress line is one sentence: clothing that does not meet local codes may cause more offence at this time; follow local codes. Canada, year-round: at religious sites, dress conservatively.

That is not a new packing list. Cover shoulders and knees. Carry a scarf for mosques. The Umayyad door still hands women a robe.
