How to Visit Palmyra in 2026

As of 17 September 2026, some people are touring the ruins. SANA reported a 15 May 2026 visit: 550 tourism students plus some foreign visitors, in ten groups, under licensed tour guides, covering the theatre, a temple, the Colonnaded Street, the baths, and Palmyra Castle. UNESCO, in 2026, still retained the Site of Palmyra on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Demining is a live workstream, not a finished certificate. The UK, US, Canada, and Australia advise against all travel to Syria.

Is Palmyra, Syria safe?

Not in the sense Western governments use that word. US State is Level 4, do not travel, and says no part of the country is safe from violence. The UK FCDO advises against all travel; terrorists are very likely to try to attack, including in major cities; the kidnap threat is very high throughout Syria. Canada, updated 9 September 2026: avoid all travel; if you are in Syria, leave. None of those pages carve Palmyra out.

“Safe” on a tour page means that operator is willing to take paying guests into a defined loop that week. It does not mean UNESCO took Palmyra off the Danger list. It does not mean the desert is walked. It does not mean your insurer will pay.

Access — sources disagree

We opened the files on 17 September 2026. We did not open a DGAM page that says the archaeological zone is “open now” as a statute.

Can you visit Palmyra, Syria? Physically, some people did in May 2026 on a guided student tour. Should your government, your insurer, or a consular desk back that? The pages we opened say no.

How to get there — taxi vs licensed driver

UNESCO places the oasis north-east of Damascus, in Homs province. There is no Palmyra airport on the FCDO “operating” list (Damascus and Aleppo only). You go by road.

We opened no Palmyra-specific tourist permit on 17 September 2026. Do not invent one. You still need whatever Syria entry stamp your passport actually gets: Syria visa on arrival 2026.

Checkpoint practice (undated field intel): passport copies out, phone down, no photographs of the post, let the driver talk, turn around if the morning picture is bad. Canada’s phone-at-checkpoint ban is dated. The rest is desk practice. Ask someone who drove it this month.

Do not stack Palmyra with Krak des Chevaliers or Bosra on the same day. Those are other directions.

What you are actually visiting

The SANA tour named a short list: theatre, temple, Colonnaded Street, baths, castle. That is a monumental core. It is not the Valley of the Tombs.

UNESCO’s 2026 file still flags the portico of the Temple of Bel and the Triumphal Arch as having been in perilous condition. Do not climb unstable fabric for a photograph. Do not walk into a ruined house in the modern town (FCDO: destroyed buildings). HALO’s 2025 visit described the modern town as largely uninhabitable.

Who should skip Palmyra even if they do Damascus

• You will not travel against a do-not-travel advisory. Then Palmyra is a no.
• You wanted the museum. It is a rehabilitation project in the 2026 UNESCO file, not a ticket window we could confirm.
• You wanted the tombs. The necropolis file is illicit pits and severe damage. Stay off it.
• You only have an independent taxi and no one who ran the road this week.
• You cannot get insurance that pays against the advisory, and you cannot self-insure.
• Night is your only slot.

If three of those are you, stay in Damascus. A useful first week does not require Palmyra.

Mistakes that turn a colonnade into a worse day

• Searching “visit Palmyra” and booking Palmyra, NY or a Pacific atoll.
• Treating a May 2026 student tour as proof the desert is surveyed.
• Inventing a Palmyra permit because a forum said so.
• Following a taxi off the tarmac for a viewpoint (FCDO desert UXO).
• Building the day around the museum.
• Walking the Valley of the Tombs.
• Stacking Krak or Bosra on the same calendar day.
• Photographing checkpoints or security forces.
