A 7-Day Syria Itinerary

Seven days is a Damascus week. It is not a country tour.

As of 17 September 2026, that is the honest first-time shape. Four or five nights in the capital. Aleppo only if the day’s picture, and either the road or an ALP seat, say go. Palmyra, Krak des Chevaliers, and the coast are not on this calendar.

The US (Level 4, 11 December 2025), UK, Canada, and Australia still advise against all travel. The UK FCDO page we opened today is still current on 17 September 2026. How many days do you need in Syria?

Google stores the query as how many days in.syria. The decision is the same.

Three days is an add-on. Seven is the first dedicated week. Ten is the same week with a second city and a buffer. More than that, on a first trip, is usually people adding sites because a listicle did.

What is not on this calendar

Operator pages pack Palmyra, Krak, and a beach into seven days. We opened the 2026 files. They do not support those as scheduled tourist days.

If Palmyra is why you bought the ticket, this is the wrong page. Stay in Damascus until a current-access line exists that is not a tour brochure.

Day 1 — Land, stamp, a bed

Fly into Damascus (DAM) if you can, or cross at Masnaa / Nassib and reach the city in daylight. Seats and the boarding catch: Can you fly to Syria?. The stamp is cash. Airport length has often been 15 days even when a 30-day stay is possible. Keep the receipt.

Book the room before you land. Booking.com is still the wrong country: How to book hotels in Syria. Old City if you want to walk to the Umayyad in the morning. A modern strip if you want a car and a larger desk. Neither is a safety rating. The UK FCDO lists hotels, cafés, and markets as possible terrorist targets and records IEDs outside the Four Seasons and the tourism ministry on 7 July 2026.

If you land with hours of daylight, walk toward Al-Hamidiyah and stop when you are tired. Do not “see the country” on day one. Buy the SIM at a real operator desk after the stamp: Tourist SIM and eSIM in Syria. Carry cash US dollars. Cards are a late-2026 test, not a plan.

Night driving is a FCDO flag. Do not schedule a late DAM arrival plus an Aleppo transfer.

Day 2 — Old City loop

This is the trip. The walk is on the Damascus page so we do not reprint it: What to do in Damascus.

Al-Hamidiyah into the Umayyad Mosque, then the lanes toward Bab Sharqi / Straight Street. UNESCO inscribed the Ancient City in 1979. It has sat on the World Heritage in Danger list since 2013. You are walking a listed, still-listed-in-danger city that people use.

Mosque-hour listings disagree. Treat the door as the timetable. Friday midday is for worshippers. Modest dress; women are often handed a robe. Full packing: What to wear in Syria.

Stay on paved streets. The FCDO still flags unexploded weapons off-road and in ruined buildings. Do not climb into a destroyed block for a photograph. Do not photograph checkpoints.

If the morning’s picture is bad — a blast the night before, a curfew, a rumour you cannot check — skip the souq. You still have days 3 and 4. A good morning in Al-Hamidiyah and a bad night in the same city can share a calendar. That is why this week is Damascus-heavy: you can change the day without changing the city.

Day 3 — Indoor morning, then the other lanes

National Museum or Azm Palace if the ticket window is actually open. Listings this retrieval week described Tuesday closures and shorter winter afternoons. Do not build the day around a locked door. If it is closed, you still have the Christian quarter, Ananias chapel if that door is open, and the lanes you skipped yesterday.

This is also the spare morning for visa-receipt photocopies, a changer, and asking the hotel whether a foreign card will clear this week. It looks like “nothing.” It is how a 7-day stamp week does not fall over on day 6.

Eat where the souq is full. We are not publishing a restaurant ranking. Named kitchens go stale. If a place was good, name it — with the night you went — in the planning topic.

Day 4 — Stay in Damascus

A fourth Damascus day is the product, not padding.

Use it for: the museum you missed, a Friday you should not spend lingering in the courtyard, a rest day after a late DAM arrival, or simply walking the same lanes at a different hour. First-time visitors who “finish” Damascus in 36 hours are usually matching a brochure, not the city.

Do not spend day 4 driving toward Palmyra “because we have a spare day.” That is how the skip table gets ignored.

Days 5–6 — Stay, or Aleppo if the picture allows

Aleppo is a second city, not a checkbox. City-level risk, UNESCO 2026 Danger-list retention, citadel works, and the road: Is Aleppo safe to visit in 2026?. No official page we opened scores Aleppo safer than Damascus. The July 2026 bombings the FCDO lists were in the capital. That is not a reason to pick Aleppo.

Two paths, not a hop.

• Fly DAM–ALP or into ALP on a later ticket. Canada and the FCDO both describe limited commercial service at Aleppo. Confirm the seat the week you travel. Airports have shut during fighting.
• Overland from Damascus. The FCDO: road travel is dangerous. Fighting has closed roads. Night driving is particularly dangerous. A licensed driver who already runs that road is a safety tool. If the morning picture is bad, skip. You still have Damascus.

If you go: one full day for the citadel (door is the timetable; entrance works are live) and the parts of Souq al-Madina that are trading. The museum was listed closed for renovation this retrieval week. Do not build the day around it.

If you do not go: days 5–6 remain Damascus. That is still a complete 7-day itinerary. It is the one most first-time independent travellers can actually finish.

Day 7 — Leave with a spare morning

Reconfirm the outbound flight or the land crossing the night before. Build slack. Fighting has suspended commercial flights (FCDO). Do not night-drive to DAM. If you are exiting via Beirut, Masnaa is a morning job, not a 90-minute errand.

A 15-day stamp that dies on day 8 is a different problem from a missed connection. Count both.

Cash for the last taxi and the Lebanese stamp duty if you cross west. Do not assume a card will save you at the border.

Mistakes that waste the stamp

• Scheduling Palmyra, Krak, or the coast because a 7-day tour page did.
• Treating a 15-day airport stamp as a month.
• Damascus in 36 hours, then a long road, then Aleppo, then a tight DAM departure.
• Night driving.
• Booking the week on Booking.com (Virginia) or waiting for Airbnb.
• Building day 2 around mosque hours copied from a list that disagrees with two others.
• Photographing security or walking off the tarmac (UXO).
• Skipping the safety page because the itinerary looks like a city break.
