Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai, and the mountains
Northern Thailand is slower, cooler in the proper winter months, and built around Chiang Mai as a hub. People come for temples, cafes, trekking, and a laptop month. They also come in March and wonder why the air is grey — burning season is a real planning factor, not a rumor.
Chiang Mai vs Chiang Rai vs Pai is the usual split. Pai is a winding minivan and a small-town nightlife strip. Chiang Rai is temples and a base for the far north. Chiang Mai is the one with enough people, food, and coworking that a month does not feel like a gamble.
Scooters are how a lot of the countryside gets seen and how a lot of hospital bills start. If you ask about a loop, say your riding experience. Day trips (Doi Inthanon, the canyon, elephant parks) get better answers when you say whether you have a license and a pillion.
Songkran in the north is its own week. If that is why you are coming, ask about that, not “things to do.” If you want quiet temples, ask for the opposite week.
