How do I check a Chiang Mai elephant venue?
Kid, 8. Bangkok pin first. If we add the north I will not buy a riding camp that says sanctuary.
Look, not touch
| If the listing | Do | Not |
|---|---|---|
| Ride, bathe, touch, tricks, a baby you can hold | Skip. WAP: if you can get that close, it was trained | A Klook title with the word sanctuary |
| Observation only, distance, no show | Check World Animal Protection’s list (Bred to Entertain, 2026) | A Facebook album as accreditation |
| You cannot find the venue on that list | Assume it is entertainment until you prove otherwise | “Rescue” in the URL as a certificate |
| The kid only wants a photo on a neck | That is the camp. Skip | Bargaining the ride as a moral middle |
WAP surveyed 236 Thai venues / 2,849 elephants (field work into 2025; report 2026): two in three in poor conditions; 42% still used for rides. I am not ranking a camp I have not checked this week. Not a welfare certificate.
Whether anyone in the group will accept “just looking.”
