Is tap water in Bangkok safe to drink?

The first 72 hours FAQ is one sentence. I want what health pages actually say versus what the water utility says.

Two different sentences

SourceWhat it saysUse
CDC Yellow Book, ThailandDo not drink tap water; bottled or sealed drinks; avoid ice in the same breath as street-food cautionTraveller default
Metropolitan Waterworks AuthorityTreated supply is produced to MWA / WHO-referenced specs; they discuss chlorine and building tanksUtility claim about the plant, not every rooftop tank
Brushing teethCDC’s food-and-water section is conservative; bottled is the no-argument optionPersonal risk, not a lab result

CDC: cdc.gov Yellow Book Thailand. MWA consumer reports sit on mwa.co.th. Most visitors drink bottled or hotel-filtered.

This is not medical advice. Read CDC and your clinician. If you have a specific constraint (kid, pregnancy, ice), say so. Do not treat a forum as a lab result.

I drink bottled. Building tanks are the reason, not the plant brochure. MWA can be right about the treatment works and you still do not know the rooftop.

Ice at a busy stall is usually commercial. That is still not a lab test. If someone in the group is cautious, start cooked and bottled.

CDC says do not drink tap, sealed drinks, careful with ice. That is the page I am following. Not looking for a local to call me dramatic.

Chiang Mai is the same conversation. Utility vs pipe. Bottled is cheap. Do not make this a personality.

Brushing teeth. CDC food-and-water section is conservative. I use bottled for that too because I cannot be bothered to debate it.

Hotel says “filtered drinking water on each floor.” Is that the same as tap. I assume no.

If they give you a jug from a marked filter, that is their filter, not the municipal tap. Still not medical advice.

Swimming pools / freshwater. CDC also says do not swallow untreated freshwater when swimming. Separate from the drinking-glass question.

Street food made me fine. Tap water is not the same risk as a busy grilled-chicken stall. Do not mix the two threads.

Kid, 8 years old. I am staying on bottled and peeled fruit. Not interested in “locals drink it.”

7-Eleven water is everywhere. The expensive part is buying 300ml in a tourist fridge. Big bottles from a supermarket once.

Islands: more tanks, more caution. Bangkok utility PDFs do not travel with you to a bungalow.
