First 72 hours in Thailand

Before the wheels go down

1. TDAC submitted in the official 3-day window. Screenshot the QR. UK FCDO describes the same window for foreign nationals.
2. Know whether you are visa-exempt, VoA, or visa. The stamp is not a surprise quiz if you checked your embassy.
3. Passport still valid six months after arrival and a blank page (UK FCDO, for British citizen passports; other missions publish similar rules — confirm yours).
4. First-night address in English for the arrival card and the driver.
5. Funds evidence you can show if asked (TAT, 6 July 2026: 10,000 THB per person / 20,000 per family in some visa-exempt and VoA cases).
6. Offline map of that neighbourhood. Grab installed.

Hour 0–4: the airport

If you landed at DMK, you do not have the Airport Rail Link. Use the DMK vs BKK branch.

Late arrival: official taxi or Grab. Do not invent a pub-crawl. ARL hours are roughly early morning to midnight — check the board, do not memorise a blog.

Hour 4–24: one neighbourhood

Sleep. Eat something ordinary. Learn how BTS/MRT gates work if you are in Bangkok.

BTS is two lines, about 68.5 km / 60 stations, interchange at Siam (BTS structure). You do not need the Grand Palace on day one unless your trip is three days total.

If you have no booking, pick a busy area with 24-hour food and a station — and pay more for the privilege. Walking unknown sois with luggage at 01:00 is not “authentic.” Neighbourhood trade-offs: where to stay first time.

Day 2–3: decide the rest of the trip

Use best time and Andaman vs Gulf if islands are the point. A first Thailand trip that tries Bangkok + Chiang Mai + both coasts in 10 days is how people only see airports. The 10-day cut list is the shape, not a temple marathon.

Budget a boring number: see daily budget. ATM fees punish nibbling. Rail in Bangkok is the spend that does not surge (BTS adult cap 65 THB including extensions from 1 November 2025 — confirm on the fare calculator).

Water, heat, and motorbikes

CDC Travelers’ Health — Thailand (retrieved 30 August 2026): practise safe food and water habits; do not swallow untreated freshwater; leptospirosis is listed for freshwater exposure. Most visitors drink bottled or filtered water. This page is not a clinic.

Traffic and motorbikes hurt more visitors than the crime stories. Cross with the lights. Do not rent a bike because it is cheap. Scams that repeat: unofficial taxis, gem shops, and “the temple is closed but my cousin.” Read tourist scams. Ask in Safety with the neighbourhood, not “is Thailand safe.”
