Thailand in 10 days: what to keep and what to cut

Ten days is two places done properly, or three places if one of them is only Bangkok. It is not Bangkok + Chiang Mai + Phuket + a second island. As of 30 August 2026 the default first-timer shape is: three nights Bangkok on the BTS, then one coast in season — Andaman roughly November–March, Gulf often the workaround in boreal summer. Skip a smoky north in March. File TDAC. This is a cut list, not a temple marathon.

Direct answer

Ten days: Bangkok (about 3 nights) + one other region (the rest). The other region is a coast in season or the north in a clear-air month, not both, and not two coasts. Last checked 30 August 2026.

File a TDAC in the official three-day window. Confirm what visa rule is in force the week you fly.

What 10 days cannot do

The SERP is full of “Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, maybe Krabi.” That is a 16–18 day trip wearing a 10-day hat. You will remember queues and 05:00 alarms.

You want Keep Cut
First trip, photos of a beach BKK 3 + one Andaman or Gulf stay Second island-hop, the north, “quick Pai”
Temples and cooler air BKK 3 + Chiang Mai, only Nov–Jan (or live AQI looks sane) Phuket “for a few days”
Party island BKK 2–3 + Phangan in season Adding Phuket and Tao and Bangkok nightlife as equals
Least flying BKK + a coast you can reach without stacking two domestics Chiang Mai and an island

Domestic hops are not “one hour.” They are check-in, pad, delay, and a lost afternoon. Count half days.

Month fork (the actual itinerary)

Do not memorise a city order without a month. Use best time and Andaman vs Gulf.

If you travel 10-day shape Why
Late Nov–February BKK 3 + Andaman (Phuket or Krabi/Lanta, not both as separate bases) Peak beach weather, peak prices. Book beds.
March–April BKK 3 + coast (Andaman still often swimmable early; north is haze risk) Songkran in mid-April is a festival, not a transit day
May–August BKK 3 + Gulf islands Southwest monsoon on the Andaman. Gulf is the usual workaround.
September–October BKK heavier, or Gulf with backup indoor days; Andaman is often the rough end Overlap when both coasts can be messy

There is no “best 10 days” in the abstract. There is a best 10 days in July and a different one in January.

Two worked examples (nights, not temples per hour)

These assume a first-timer who has not bought island tickets yet. Swap the coast using the table above.

A — Bangkok + one coast (default)

Nights Where Job
1–3 Bangkok, near BTS Sleep, one palace/old-town day, food, do not “do the city.”
4–10 One coastal base Swim, boat only if the weather flag says so. One island, not a hop every 36 hours.

Fly or bus/train once. Do not island-hop on a 10-day clock unless the hop is the holiday (and you already know the boat).

B — Bangkok + north (only in a clear-air window)

Nights Where Job
1–3 Bangkok on rail Same as A.
4–10 Chiang Mai Temples, food, one countryside day. Not Pai plus Chiang Rai plus Inthanon.

Confirm burning season if the dates sit in Feb–April. If the AQI is unhealthy, this itinerary becomes A.

Overnight train: State Railway of Thailand is the operator. Origin station names have changed in the last few years. Check railway.co.th for the service you will actually board. A flight is how most 10-day trips protect the last beach morning.

Bangkok nights are not optional padding

A first landing after a long-haul is 72 hours of logistics, not Wat Pho at 08:00 from the airport. Three Bangkok nights exist so you can fail a meal, miss a river boat, and still have a day that is not transit.

Stay where the Skytrain is. Old Town as a day trip is cheaper in time than sleeping there if the rest of the week is Sukhumvit or a flight.

Common mistakes

  • Both coasts “because we might not come back.” You will come back, or you will remember airports.
  • Pai on a 10-day first trip. Pai is a side quest for people who already like the north.
  • A 06:00 food-tour, a 14:00 massage, a 18:00 rooftop, a 22:00 market, then a 07:00 flight. That is content, not a trip.
  • Ignoring monsoon direction. Phuket in September is a different product from Samui in July.

Money and entry, not a packing list

Budget bands live on daily budget 2026. ATM fees are real. Ten days of “we will figure it out” is how people donate 220 THB per nibble.

Entry: visa 2026 + TDAC. Ten days rarely hits an extension problem. Overstay is still a scam-and-stamp problem if you cannot read the date in the passport.

Where this sits on Meet Locale

Ask in First trip with month, must-see list, and how many flights you will tolerate. People will tell you what to delete. That is the whole point of a 10-day page: deletion.

If you already know you have 14 days, do not stretch this page. Wait for a 14-day URL that adds nights, or add either the north or a second island — still not both coasts.

FAQ

Is 10 days enough for Thailand?

Enough for Bangkok plus one other region. Not enough for both coasts and the north. If you try, you will mainly see airports. Fourteen days is the first time the north *or* a second island becomes reasonable — still not both coasts.

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket in 10 days?

That is the itinerary to cut. You get two airport days, one exhausted north, and a coast you could have had more of. Pick Bangkok + coast, or Bangkok + north in a clear-air month. Not all three.

What is the best 10-day itinerary in July?

Bangkok plus the **Gulf** (Samui / Phangan / Tao), not Phuket, unless you like Andaman rain. See Andaman vs Gulf. Do not add Chiang Mai in July as a “must” either — it is rainy in the north too, just a different problem than haze.

Should I include Chiang Mai in March?

Usually no, if you have only 10 days and a choice. March is peak burning-season risk. Put those nights on a coast in season or add Bangkok days. Read the burning-season page before you buy the north flight.

Do I need a visa for a 10-day trip?

Many ordinary passports still entered visa-exempt as of 30 August 2026, but that is a Gazette-sensitive fact. Read Thailand visa 2026 and file TDAC anyway. Ten days is inside even a future 30-day stamp for most holiday lengths — the stamp is still not this itinerary’s job.

Open-jaw flights (land BKK, leave from an island)?

Yes, that is how you stop wasting a day returning to Bangkok. Only if the fare is not absurd and you can clear the island airport with a margin. A cheap return to BKK plus one domestic hop is the other honest version.

Is the overnight train better than a flight to Chiang Mai?

It saves a hotel night if you actually sleep. It is not faster. Check State Railway of Thailand for the current origin station and timetable; do not trust a screenshot of Hua Lamphong from a blog that predates Krung Thep Aphiwat. For 10 days, a flight is the usual way to protect beach time.
