Thailand daily budget 2026

Plan in three bands for 2026: a tight backpacker day around 800–1,200 THB outside the heaviest tourist traps, a mid trip around 1,800–3,000 THB, and a comfortable trip from 4,000 THB up. Those ranges include food and local transport but not international flights or long-stay villas. Thai ATMs commonly add 220 THB per foreign-card withdrawal.

Three bands (2026, tourist, per person per day)

These are planning bands, not a receipt. They assume you already paid to get to Thailand.

Bangkok mid-range sits in the middle band if you use rail. A west-coast beach in January sits higher. Isaan sits lower.

How a mid day usually adds up (planning split, not a receipt)

Sleep and meals are the swing. Transport below is what you can check on an official board. Food and rooms move by neighbourhood and month — treat those rows as 2026 arithmetic that fits the bands, not a price list.

Dated transport you can verify:

BTS: adult fares are distance-based. BTSC published an adult maximum of 65 THB including extension lines from 1 November 2025. Use the official fare calculator.
Airport Rail Link (BKK): passenger charts in 2026 still show 15–45 THB, 45 THB Suvarnabhumi–Phaya Thai. Confirm on the station board. See BKK to the city.
eSIM: AIS tourist packs listed from 399 THB on 30 August 2026 — a trip one-off, not a daily cost.
Visa extension: commonly 1,900 THB cash for a 30-day add-on if you do it.

The ATM tax (dated)

In 2026, traveller roundups still report that major Thai banks charge about 220 THB per withdrawal on foreign-issued cards, on top of whatever your home bank charges. That fee is flat, so small withdrawals are a tax. We did not find a Bank of Thailand tourist leaflet that quotes 220 as a consumer product; believe the fee on the ATM screen.

Decline DCC (the machine offering to bill you in USD/EUR). Take THB.
Your home bank’s daily limit may be lower than the Thai machine’s ceiling.
Airport ATMs charge the same class of fee and are more aggressive about DCC.

If a machine shows a different fee, believe the screen.

Cash you must be able to show at immigration (TAT funds reminder: 10,000 THB per person in some visa-exempt/VoA cases). That is an entry screen, not a daily spend.

How to use this on a 10-day trip

Pick a band honestly (alcohol is a band of its own).
Multiply by days, then add two cash buffers: first-night transport and one island hop.
Track ATM fees as a line item. Three 220 THB hits are 660 THB you did not spend on food.

FAQ

How much cash should I withdraw?

As much as your card and the machine allow, as rarely as possible. A flat ~220 THB Thai-bank fee on foreign cards makes five 2,000 THB withdrawals more expensive than one 10,000 THB withdrawal. Decline conversion to your home currency (DCC).

Is 1,000 THB a day enough?

In 2026 it can cover dorms, street food, and local transport in cheaper towns if you do not drink much and you are not on a yacht island. It will not cover a Sukhumvit hotel plus Grab plus a full-moon ticket.

Do cards work?

Cards work in malls, many hotels, and Grab. Street food, some taxis, and small guesthouses want cash. Some tourist businesses add a few percent. Keep a backup card.

What about island extra costs?

Ferries, longtails, national park fees, and “no ATM on this island” days. Budget a spike the day you hop. See Andaman vs Gulf for which season you are paying peak rates.

Should I exchange at the airport?

A small amount for the taxi is fine. Super-Rich–style booths in town often beat airport counters. ATMs are the other default if your card’s FX fee is sane.

Is BTS cheap enough to ignore Grab?

In Bangkok, rail is the budget that does not surge. BTSC’s published adult cap including extension lines is 65 THB from 1 November 2025; short hops are less. Confirm on bts.co.th/eng/routemap.html. Grab still wins with luggage at midnight.

What one-off costs sit outside the daily band?

International flights, an eSIM (AIS tourist packs listed from 399 THB on 30 August 2026), a tourist-stay extension commonly 1,900 THB cash, and insurance. ATM fees are a line item: three 220 THB hits are 660 THB you did not spend on food.
