Why is the Thai ATM charging 220 baht?

Foreign card, bank lobby machine. The screen wanted 220 on top of my home-bank fee. Is that a scam or the fee everyone quotes.

The 220 is a fee on the screen, not a secret

HitWhat it isWhat to do
~220 THB Thai-bank charge on a foreign cardCommon 2026 traveller figure on major-bank machinesBelieve this screen, not a 2023 blog
Conversion to your home currency (DCC)Extra spreadDecline; take THB
Five 2,000 THB withdrawalsFive flat feesOne larger withdrawal, as far as the machine allows
Airport arrivals ATM at 01:00Same fee familyFine for a taxi; not how you fund the week

I have not seen a Bank of Thailand tourist leaflet that prints 220 on a poster. The number on this machine was 220. Daily budget treats that as a line item. A cloned card is a different problem — scams.

This is not financial advice. Bank name and whether you declined conversion. That is the useful reply.

I have been taking the 220 as a line item. One withdrawal. Chinatown machines in a bank lobby, not a tourist-strip box if I can help it.

Decline the conversion. If the screen is in your home currency with a “nice” rate, that is the spread. THB.

Some home banks rebate ATM fees. That is a you-problem. The Thai 220 still hits unless your card is on a local deal I have not seen.

This is not the 10,000 baht immigration evidence. Do not withdraw 10k at 01:00 just to photograph it for the desk.

Is AEON / government-bank machines still the “no fee” rumour. I keep seeing 2019 posts.

Believe the screen in front of you. Rumours about a magic zero-fee machine die every year. If it is 220, it is 220.

Cover the PIN. Skimming is the scam page. 220 is a fee. Different threads.

Wise / Revolut still shows the Thai-bank 220 on many machines. Do not assume the colourful card skips it.

Chiang Mai same story. I would not hunt a unicorn ATM for 40 minutes to save one fee.

Airport ATM for the taxi is fine. Five more the next morning is how the week costs 1,100 in fees.

Daily budget page already has this. The question is only: is 220 a scam. It is not. The cloned-card case is.
