Can I ride a scooter on a car licence in Thailand?

Shops will still rent you one. That is not the legal test. The trap is Category A. Moon Muang renting off a car-licence photo is already on this feed. This post is the class on the licence.

Two documents, same category

You havePolice / insurer view (2026 rental guides, Thaiger IDP explainers)
Home motorcycle licence + IDP with A stampedThe combination tourists are told to carry
Car-only licence (often Category B) + car-only IDPUnlicensed for a scooter, including 110–125cc tourist bikes
IDP bought in ThailandWrong country. Issue it at home before you fly
ASEAN national licence (no IDP)Separate rule for ASEAN licences — do not copy that if you are UK/US/EU

Rental desks want the bike out the door. Checkpoints in Phuket and on Chiang Mai canal roads have been asking. Fine is often cited in the 500–1,000 THB range when they bother. The expensive part is insurance denial after a crash if you had no motorcycle endorsement.

This is not legal advice. If you cannot get Category A at home, do not ride. Grab exists. Related: Thailand scams is a different problem.

Home country and whether your licence already has a motorcycle class. Otherwise the answer is a guess.

AU car licence. Shops in Karon will photograph it and hand you a bike. Is that the Category A trap, or do they only care about an IDP booklet.

Phuket checkpoints have been asking. Carry home licence + IDP. If A is not stamped, you are the unlicensed rider in that conversation.

UK car licence only. Can I get Category A IDP without a motorcycle test at home. If not, I am not riding. That is the whole answer.

IDP is a translation of what you already have. It does not add a motorcycle class you never earned. Issue it at home. Not here.

Helmet. Separate fine, separate stupidity. Even with A on the IDP, wear one that is actually a helmet.

Travel insurance motorcycle clause: read the cc limit and the licence requirement. A 500 THB police ticket is not the hospital bill.

Pai road is not the place to learn. If you need a scooter to “see Pai,” that is a reason to skip Pai or take a tour, not to rent illegally.

Grab and songthaew exist in Chiang Mai. The “everyone rides” line is how people end up in the other thread.

Get the IDP before you fly. A laminated “international licence” sold on Khao San is not the 1949/1968 booklet from your auto club.

Fine amounts people quote are 500–1,000 THB when they bother. Inconsistent. That is not a loophole. It is luck you should not budget.

Video the bike before you leave the shop. Scratch disputes are a different scam family. Still does not fix a missing Category A.

Bangkok traffic is not the learner environment either. If you came to ride, get the licence class at home first.

ASEAN licence without IDP. That exception is not for a US/UK/EU car licence. Do not copy it into your bag.
