AIS or True eSIM for a two-week trip?

Phone supports eSIM. Two weeks, Bangkok then one island. I keep seeing “299/499/799” screenshots. What is actually true this month.

Registration

NBTC wants the SIM registered to a passport. AIS also describes extra identity steps if you try to keep a tourist SIM past 60 days from activation. 7-Eleven will often not register a cheap tourist card. If a kiosk will not register, walk.

Phone model and whether you need a Thai number. That is the fork.

AIS if you leave the city. True is fine if you never leave BTS range. Coverage maps change; that split is still the one people use.

Pre-install, leave the line off until you land if the operator says so. If the QR fails, the airport counter is the backup, not a Facebook seller.

Chiang Mai is fine on either. Pai and some island piers are where AIS usually wins. Do not buy a 5-day pack for a 16-day trip and hope it extends like postpaid.

Will Grab OTP work on a global eSIM with no Thai number. That is the actual reason I am looking at AIS.

Thai number still helps. Airport Wi-Fi can get you one car. The rest of the week is boring in a good way with a local line.

Phuket town and the beaches: AIS. I would not die on True, but I also would not pick a random dtac-labelled kiosk that will not scan the passport.

7-Eleven: they often will not register a tourist SIM. Branded counter or operator app. If they will not register, walk.

True and the old dtac brand are the same group now. Read the receipt. Do not assume you bought “the other network.”

Tonight: airport Wi-Fi or a pre-bought eSIM. City shop is a tomorrow problem. Do not stand in an unregistered kiosk at 1am.

Passport at the counter, not a photo. NBTC registration is the rule. If they skip it, you do not have a number that lasts.
