What happens if I overstay Thailand by one day?
A five-night first stay on the usual tourism exemption, which is 30 days for most passports since 15 Sep 2026, with the outbound on day 6. I am asking because the flight can slip, not because we are at the end of a long stay. I am not looking for a “500 baht is cheap” hack.
One day is still a day
| Layer | What to treat as true on 9 Sep 2026 | Not |
|---|---|---|
| Fine (UK FCDO) | 500 THB per day, cap 20,000 THB | A grace day. Day one counts |
| Paid at the airport | Common for a short, voluntary exit | A right. Officers still decide |
| Longer overstay | Detention, deportation, bans up to 10 years on the same FCDO page | A hostel ladder as law |
| Already expired | You are not in the extension queue | “We will extend tomorrow” |
Visa 2026 cites that FCDO overstay line. This is not legal advice. Change the flight or extend before the date in the passport.
Nationality, stamp date, and fly-out date. Then still believe the officer.
