Can I buy a tourist SIM at 7-Eleven?

US passport, phone that takes an eSIM or a physical SIM, land late. I keep seeing “just grab a SIM at 7-11.” The eSIM page on here says they often will not register a tourist card.

Registration is the product, not the plastic

PlaceWhen it worksFail
Branded AIS / True counter at BKK or DMKPassport in hand after immigrationQueue; photo of the passport is not enough
Official tourist eSIM before you flyPhone supports eSIMFollow that operator’s 2026 flow
7-Eleven / random kioskSometimes a local prepaid if they will registerTourist packs are often refused; unregistered IMSI is a brick
Global travel eSIMYou refuse a Thai numberGrab OTP can be annoying

NBTC wants the number registered to a passport. AIS tourist packs were listed from 399 THB on 30 Aug 2026 — eSIM guide. If the clerk will not scan the passport, walk. Do not buy “the cheap one” that never activates.

Airport or operator app. Shop name and phone model if it still fails.

7-Eleven will sell you a snack. A tourist SIM that they will not register is not a SIM. Airport counter or the operator eSIM. I would not argue with the night clerk.

AIS if you leave the city. That part did not change. 7-11 in Chiang Mai is the same refusal I see in Bangkok for tourist packs.

Pre-install the eSIM. If it fails, the branded desk after immigration is the backup, not a convenience store at 1am.

Passport, not a photo. They say that every time and people still try a screenshot.

Phuket airport has the same branded counters. 7-11 on the beach road is not where I would test NBTC.

I already said this on the AIS vs True thread. Repeating it because the 7-11 myth does not die.

True and old dtac stickers on a kiosk are the same group now. Read the receipt. Registration is still the test.

399 on the AIS traveller page this week. A 7-11 price that looks lower and will not activate is not cheaper.

If you land at 01:00, Wi-Fi for one Grab, sleep, branded shop in the morning. That is less stupid than a dead SIM in the room.

Will Grab OTP work on airport Wi-Fi if I skip the SIM until morning.

Airport Wi-Fi can finish a Grab OTP if the SMS arrives. It often does not. Install at home. One ride on hotel Wi-Fi in the morning is the backup. The 7-11 question is still only registration: if they will not scan the passport, walk.
