Yeah Booking is useless for the beit / bayt places. Google Maps, then WhatsApp or email. I emailed three, two replied the same day. Paid everything in cash when I walked in.
Reserved one night on WhatsApp, they did not ask me to prepay at all. Just showed up.
Al Haram is real, people here use it for everything. I still would not send a hotel deposit from the US through it. There is no chargeback if the room is a mattress and a generator.
Old City got stupid expensive after everything opened. Do not expect a bargain courtyard. And yes cash.
If they insist on the first night before you arrive I would pick another house. Plenty of them answer WhatsApp.
