Chow Kit area — actually unsafe or overhyped?
Solo female, hostel search showed cheap rooms near Chow Kit market. Reddit threads scared me. Real talk?

Chow Kit is rougher around the edges than Bukit Bintang or KLCC but "dangerous" is overstated for daylight hours. The market area is crowded and fine 8am–6pm — watch pickpockets like any dense market. At night the back streets near older hotels and the former red-light fringe can feel uncomfortable for solo women; Grab door-to-door, don't walk alone after 10pm. Cheap hostels there save money but add mental overhead. For RM20–40/night more, stay BB or Chinatown and sleep easier. Police presence increased after 2020. If you're solo female first time, I'd pick BB/KLCC over Chow Kit — not because you'll get attacked, but because hassle and catcalling are more common here than in tourist zones.
GrabPink (women drivers) works from Chow Kit fine — use it after dark if you stay there anyway.
Walked through daytime — busy market, felt like any big Asian market. Wouldn't wander empty back lanes at 1am solo.
