Tha Phae east/south of gate is sweet spot — walk to temples, Sunday market, river dinners. West side louder bars till 1am — check hotel reviews for noise. Not Khao San chaos; mostly couples and families now. 800–1,800 baht guesthouses plentiful. Songthaew hub for 30 baht rides. Perfect first-timer base if you skip Nimman cafe scene. Burning season haze still hits — not elevation fix.
