People treat Chiang Mai like a launchpad — 762 curves to Pai, White Temple photos, highest peak in Thailand. All doable. Not all worth doing the way Instagram compresses them. I have done each from a Chiang Mai base; this is how I decide now.

Doi Suthep at sunrise — weekday beats weekend buses Songthaew from CMU area, 60 baht. Steps at 6:45am, city still in mist. Weekend = tour bus chaos by 9am. Doi Suthep sunrise — songthaew from Chiang Mai University area, 60 baht. Steps are a workout but views over the city at 7am are worth it. Go weekday, weekend is bus tour chaos. Dress covered — they lend wraps at the gate.
