## Guides

- [Can Tourists Go to Syria Right Now?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/can-tourists-go-to-syria): As of 17 September 2026, tourists are entering Syria and many passports stamp on arrival. The US, UK, Canada and Australia still advise against all travel. That is not a recommendation to go. If you still go, you go against those advisories, with little or no consular help. This is not legal advice. Confirm entry with Syrian authorities and your airline before you fly.
- [Is There a Travel Ban on Syria?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/is-there-a-travel-ban-on-syria): As of 21 September 2026, three different rules get called a travel ban. Foreign tourists can still enter Syria on many passports. OFAC’s Syria sanctions program ended 1 July 2025 (FAQ 1220, updated 24 August 2026). Proclamation 10998 fully suspends Syrian nationals’ entry to the United States from 1 January 2026, with listed exceptions. A Level 4 advisory is not a statute that bars you from leaving. This is not legal advice.
- [Syria Visa on Arrival 2026: Fees and the Airline Catch](https://meetlocale.com/guides/syria-visa-on-arrival-2026): As of 21 September 2026, most leisure passports stamp a Syria visa on arrival at Damascus, Aleppo, Masnaa or Nassib, in cash US dollars. India is not visa-free: treat walk-up as closed until written pre-approval. Some airlines still refuse boarding without a visa number. The official eVisa site is a Coming Soon page behind an expired certificate. This is not legal advice. Confirm with Syrian authorities and your airline before you fly.
- [Can You Fly to Syria? Airlines to Damascus and Aleppo](https://meetlocale.com/guides/flights-to-syria): As of 17 September 2026, yes — some airlines sell seats to Damascus and Aleppo. UK FCDO: those two airports operate some international flights; others remain closed. Qatar Airways announced daily Doha–Damascus from 1 May 2026; Turkish Airlines sells DAM and ALP. EASA still tells operators not to use Syrian airspace (to 31 Oct 2026). Some desks refuse boarding without a visa number. This is not legal advice.
- [Is Syria Worth Visiting in 2026?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/is-syria-worth-visiting): As of 17 September 2026, Syria is worth visiting only if you already accept a do-not-travel advisory, you can enter on your passport, and you want a cash, city-based week in Damascus and maybe Aleppo — not a resort. Most of the 3.52 million H1 2026 arrivals were Syrian expatriates, not Western tourists. This is not a recommendation. Confirm insurance, entry, and flights before you book.
- [Is Syria Safe to Visit in 2026?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/is-syria-safe-to-visit): As of 21 September 2026, Syria is not a destination Western governments treat as safe to visit. The United States is Level 4, do not travel (11 December 2025). The UK, Canada, and Australia advise against all travel. People still enter Damascus and Aleppo. The UK FCDO still lists bombings in central Damascus in July 2026. This is not legal or medical advice. Read your own government's Syria page before you fly.
- [How to Get a Syria Visa](https://meetlocale.com/guides/syria-visa-requirements): As of 17 September 2026, almost every foreign tourist needs a Syria visa; India is not visa-free. Most Western, Gulf, and East Asian leisure passports stamp at Damascus, Aleppo, Masnaa, or Nassib, in cash. Canada tells non-Arab nationals to apply at a mission first. Indian and similar restricted passports need written pre-approval. Israeli citizenship is refused. This is not legal advice. Confirm with Syrian authorities and your airline before you fly.
- [What to Do in Damascus](https://meetlocale.com/guides/things-to-do-in-damascus): As of 17 September 2026, a first day in Damascus is a walk through the UNESCO Ancient City: Al-Hamidiyah Souq into the Umayyad Mosque, then toward Bab Sharqi. The city has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage in Danger list since 2013. Mosque-hour listings disagree; treat the door as the timetable. Modest dress; women are often handed a robe. UK FCDO records bombings in central Damascus in July 2026. Confirm the day’s picture before you go out.
- [Tourist SIM and eSIM in Syria](https://meetlocale.com/guides/syria-sim-esim): As of 17 September 2026, Airalo does not sell a Syria eSIM: the destination URL returned 404, and Menalink does not list Syria. Buy a local Syriatel or MTN line after the entry stamp. Syriatel’s registration page accepts a foreign passport with a new Syrian stamp. Airport kiosks close on late flights; a city service centre is the reliable desk. This is not legal advice. Confirm with the operator before you rely on a number.
- [Does WhatsApp Work in Syria?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/does-whatsapp-work-in-syria): As of 21 September 2026, OONI ran 55 WhatsApp tests from Syrian networks between 17 and 21 September. Registration, WhatsApp Web, and app endpoints were reachable in 53. Two tests on 20 September flagged an anomaly; none were confirmed as blocking. Chat on a local SIM or hotel Wi-Fi is how hotels get booked. Voice needs a stable path; the UK FCDO says cellular service is intermittent. This is not legal advice.
- [Is Aleppo Safe to Visit in 2026?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/is-aleppo-safe): As of 17 September 2026, Aleppo is not a safer substitute for Damascus. The US, UK, Canada, and Australia advise against all travel to Syria, including Aleppo. UNESCO kept the Ancient City on the World Heritage in Danger list in 2026. The citadel is still standing and visitable on some days; Xinhua photographed visitors on 20 July 2026. Some flights serve ALP. This is not legal or medical advice. Read your own government’s Syria page before you go.
- [Crossing from Lebanon to Syria at Masnaa](https://meetlocale.com/guides/lebanon-syria-border-masnaa): As of 17 September 2026, Masnaa–Jdeidet Yabous is open and most leisure passports can stamp a visa on arrival in cash. It closed in early April 2026 and reopened on 9 April (Syrian ports authority), 24-hour civilian transit. Smartraveller: Lebanon–Syria crossings have been hit by clashes and bombings and can close without notice. Carry cash USD. This is not legal advice. Check the crossing the morning you leave Beirut.
- [Syria Currency, Cash, and Cards in 2026](https://meetlocale.com/guides/syria-currency-cash-cards): As of 17 September 2026, pack cash US dollars. The Central Bank of Syria’s official mid-rate is 122.00 new Syrian pounds per US dollar. Visa tested a live international transaction on 26 August; Mastercard and QNB processed a first POS payment the same week. Coverage is not nationwide. The visa window and taxis still take notes. This is not financial advice. Confirm with a licensed changer before you rely on plastic.
- [What to Wear in Syria as a Traveller](https://meetlocale.com/guides/what-to-wear-in-syria): As of 17 September 2026, pack loose clothes that cover shoulders and knees. A headscarf is for mosques, not a street rule we can source. At the Umayyad, women are often handed a robe at the tourist door. Public beaches: a June 2025 tourism-ministry text asks for more modest swimwear; four-star hotels and private beaches are excepted. Men: a shirt when you are not in the water. This is packing, not a morality lecture.
- [How to Book Hotels in Syria](https://meetlocale.com/guides/how-to-book-hotels-in-syria): As of 17 September 2026, Booking.com’s Damascus page had no Syrian rooms; its “Syria” city page listed Graves Mountain Farm in Syria, Virginia. Airbnb’s country search for Syria also resolved to Virginia. Book on a local site or with the hotel. SyriaBooking’s homepage offers pay-on-arrival; Rahal says it takes foreign cards. Pay the desk in cash unless they confirm your card this week.
- [A 7-Day Syria Itinerary](https://meetlocale.com/guides/syria-7-day-itinerary): As of 17 September 2026, a first 7-day Syria itinerary is Damascus-heavy: four or five nights in the capital, then Aleppo only if the road or an ALP seat and that day’s picture allow. Palmyra, Krak, and the coast are not scheduled days here. UNESCO kept Palmyra and Krak on the World Heritage in Danger list in 2026. The UK FCDO still flags unexploded weapons in the desert. Count a 15-day airport stamp.
- [Best Time to Visit Syria](https://meetlocale.com/guides/best-time-to-visit-syria): As of 17 September 2026, there is no safe season. Canada: very dry and hot from May to October, with summer dust storms. CIA Factbook: hot dry summers June–August; rainy coastal winters December–February; snow or sleet periodically in Damascus. A walking week is easier outside that May–October window. Security does not follow the calendar: the UK FCDO records bombings in central Damascus in July 2026.
- [Is Syria Safe for Women Travelling Solo?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/syria-solo-female-travel): As of 21 September 2026, the US, UK, and Canada advise against all travel to Syria. Canada says women travelling alone risk harassment and, in some areas, assault. US State names dual-national exit blocks and immoral-behaviour arrests. Same-sex relations are criminalised; Canada says conviction can mean death. Women journalists in Damascus in 2025–26 are not a tourist clearance. This is not legal or medical advice. Read your government's Syria page before you fly.
- [Syria Solo Travel](https://meetlocale.com/guides/syria-solo-travel): As of 17 September 2026, you can enter Syria without a packaged tour on many passports, but the US, UK, and Canada still advise against all travel. US State says no formal tourism industry infrastructure is in place. Independent city travel is happening; some sites still need an arranged car and a licensed card. A tour is logistics, not a safety rating. This is not legal or medical advice. Read your government's Syria page before you fly.
- [How to Hire a Guide in Syria](https://meetlocale.com/guides/how-to-hire-a-guide-in-syria): As of 17 September 2026, a licensed Syrian guide holds a Ministry of Tourism certificate and card under Law 29 of 2024. The card renews every three years. The ministry English site we opened had no public register; see the card, then email info@mots.gov.sy. Pay cash. We are not printing a US-dollar day rate. Ask who held a ministry card this month in the Syria feed.
- [Can You Visit Krak des Chevaliers?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/can-you-visit-krak-des-chevaliers): As of 17 September 2026, tourists are reaching Krak des Chevaliers in western Homs. SANA called it a major tourist destination on 10 July 2026. A UNESCO/ICOMOS mission visited on 20–21 October 2025. The 2026 World Heritage Committee still kept the site on the Danger list. The UK FCDO flags mines off paved roads. We found no official hours page; listings disagree. That is access, not a safety clearance.
- [How to Visit Palmyra in 2026](https://meetlocale.com/guides/how-to-visit-palmyra-syria): As of 17 September 2026 this is Palmyra, Syria — not Palmyra NY, PA, or the Pacific atoll. SANA reported 550 students and some foreign visitors on the ruins with licensed guides on 15 May 2026. UNESCO kept the site on the World Heritage in Danger list in 2026. Demining is still underway. The UK FCDO names the Syrian desert for unexploded weapons. This is not legal or medical advice.
- [Can You Visit Bosra from Damascus?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/can-you-visit-bosra): As of 17 September 2026, some tourists reach Bosra as a same-day road from Damascus into Daraa. SANA reported more than 50 foreign groups since the start of 2026 (26 April). UNESCO kept the Ancient City of Bosra on the Danger list in 2026 and recorded no 2025 fieldwork. Canada flags kidnapping across southern Syria. We found no official hours page. That is access, not a clearance.
- [What Food Is Syria Known For?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/what-to-eat-in-syria): As of 17 September 2026, Syria is known for Levantine mezze, kibbeh, shawarma, fatteh and souq sweets — not for a ranked restaurant list. Eat in the souq, at the hotel breakfast, or at a street window. Pay cash. The UK FCDO still says food supplies are limited and often expensive. WFP, August 2026: 7.1 million people face acute food insecurity; bread prices rose over 18 percent after subsidy cuts. This is not a Damascus, Virginia dining page.
- [Can You Drink Alcohol in Syria?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/alcohol-in-syria): As of 17 September 2026, alcohol is not banned nationwide. The EU Agency for Asylum records no national legal ban. Reuters, 17 March 2026: a Damascus governorate decree took alcohol off restaurant and bar service and limited sealed takeaway to Christian districts. Days later the governorate said Decision 311 M.T. does not cover Ministry of Tourism hotels. Ask the desk this week. This is not legal advice. Verify with the named authorities.
- [Visiting Syria During Ramadan](https://meetlocale.com/guides/visiting-syria-in-ramadan): As of 17 September 2026, Syria’s last Ramadan began Thursday 19 February 2026 after the moon was not sighted with the Gulf (Al Jazeera). Canada expects the next around 7 February 2027. In daylight, do not eat, drink or smoke in public. UK FCDO: check shop hours; hotels may screen diners; dress codes read more tightly; fasting causes tiredness. This is the tourist week, not a Syrian TV-series guide.
- [Where Is Safer in Syria for Tourists?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/where-in-syria-is-safer): As of 17 September 2026, no Western advisory names a safer city in Syria. The US is Level 4 (11 December 2025). The UK, Canada, and Australia advise against all travel. People who still go mostly sleep in Damascus, where the FCDO lists July 2026 bombings. The coast and Homs are not quieter substitutes. This is not legal or medical advice. Read your own government’s Syria page before you fly.
- [Is Latakia Safe to Visit?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/is-latakia-safe): As of 17 September 2026, Latakia is not a safer coast week. The US, UK, Canada, and Australia advise against all travel to Syria, including the Mediterranean cities. The UN Human Rights Office documented sectarian killings in Latakia and Tartus from 6 March 2025. Latakia airport was handed to Syrian authorities in August 2026 for renovation, not tourist flights. This is not legal or medical advice. Read your own government’s Syria page before you go.
- [Is Homs Safe to Visit?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/is-homs-safe): As of 17 September 2026, Homs is not a safe stop for Krak des Chevaliers. Western governments advise against all travel to Syria; none carve Homs out. EUAA, using ACLED, recorded 200 security incidents in Homs governorate from 1 October 2025 to 31 May 2026, mostly violence against civilians. UNESCO kept Krak on the Danger list in 2026. This is not legal or medical advice. Read your own government’s Syria page before you go.
- [Is Tartus Safe to Visit?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/is-tartus-safe): As of 17 September 2026, Tartus is not a safer carve-out. The United States is Level 4, do not travel (11 December 2025). The UK, Canada, and Australia advise against all travel. Smartraveller lists the Tartous–Latakia and Tartous–Homs highways among routes that can close. A Damascus court on 17 September 2026 sentenced defendants over March 2025 coastal killings. This is not legal or medical advice. Read your own government’s Syria page before you fly.
- [Can You Visit Maaloula?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/can-you-visit-maaloula): As of 17 September 2026, Maaloula is a living town, not a closed museum. SANA on 11 April 2026 quoted the Damascus Countryside tourism director treating the rocky passage as a visitor site, 56 kilometres northeast of Damascus. The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate’s page puts the Convent of St Thecla 65 kilometres northeast. Convent hours this week are unconfirmed. The four Western advisories still cover the trip. Confirm the door the morning you go.
- [Places in Syria That Are Open Now](https://meetlocale.com/guides/best-places-in-syria-open-now): As of 17 September 2026, this is not a top-ten. Damascus Old City and Aleppo’s citadel and souq receive visitors and remain on UNESCO’s Danger list. Krak and Bosra were tourist sites in SANA’s July and April 2026 dispatches. Palmyra’s antiquities director said the area inside the wall was clear of war remnants on 1 September 2026; surroundings were still being surveyed. Maaloula and the coast are inhabited. Check the row, not a ranking.
- [Is Syria Expensive to Visit?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/is-syria-expensive): As of 17 September 2026, Syria is cheap on the ground in cash and dear as a whole trip: stamp about USD 75–200 for most Western passports, rooms in the tens of dollars a night on the SyriaBooking catalogue we opened, food and a SIM in cash, plus a bad-day envelope. The flight sits on top. This is not legal or financial advice. Confirm with the hotel and the visa window before you fly.
- [Can You Get Travel Insurance for Syria?](https://meetlocale.com/guides/travel-insurance-for-syria): As of 17 September 2026, most consumer policies we opened exclude Syria or void cover against a do-not-travel advisory. IATI publishes a Syria sales page, but comments there today say Syria is not in the quote list, and IATI’s 27 August 2026 reply said the product is not currently offered. Ask your insurer in writing whether medical evacuation pays. This is not insurance advice. We do not sell a policy.
- [Taxi Apps in Syria](https://meetlocale.com/guides/syria-taxi-apps): As of 17 September 2026, Damascus has ride-hail apps. Electro Taxi is on Google Play and the App Store (SANKARI GOLD; Android updated 23 June 2026). TaxiTel’s own site books by phone and WhatsApp and publishes no fares. US State: yellow taxis and local apps generally take cash. We did not complete a booking and we print no fare. Carry notes. How to carry them: the currency page.
- [Crossing from Jordan to Syria at Nassib](https://meetlocale.com/guides/jordan-syria-border-nassib): As of 17 September 2026, Jaber–Nassib is open for civilian passengers. Jordan's Interior Ministry claimed 24-hour operations from 23 March 2025; VisitJordan still lists 08:00–18:00. The UK FCDO advises against all travel within 3 km of the border. Most leisure passports can stamp a visa on arrival in cash USD. This is not legal advice. Confirm the crossing the morning you leave Amman.
- [How to Hire a Private Driver in Syria](https://meetlocale.com/guides/private-driver-in-syria): As of 17 September 2026, hire a car with a driver for day trips and the Aleppo road. The UK FCDO says road travel is dangerous because of poor maintenance, checkpoints, unexploded weapons, and night driving. We will not invent a US-dollar day rate. Get a quote in writing, pay cash, and ask the Syria feed who drove your route this month.
